Colorado (USA) : Famous for the Colorado national monument (1911) which has towering monoliths and canyons.

Corsica (France) : Largest island in France. Napolean Bonaparte was born here.

Cotopaxi (Eucador) : Highest active volcano in the world.

Delphi (Greece) : A village famous in ancient Greece as the sancuary of Apollo and the seat of his oracle.

Dhaka (Bangladesh) : Capital. 'The city of mosques'. Centre of world's biggest jute growing region. From 1947 it was East Pakistan and later in 1971 it become a free country - Bangladesh.

Dharamsala (India) : The home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile. Hill station established in the 19 th century.

Doogton (Ohio, USA) : ometown of Wilbur and Orville Wright.

Essen (Germany) : On the Ruhr river, it is home to the Krupp steel works, Europe's most extensive iron and steel works. Destroyed in World war II.

Eyre lake (Australia) : At 15 m below sea level, it is the lowest point on the continent.

Falkland islands (UK) : British crown colony in south Atlantic ocean. War between Argentina and Britain over the islands in 1982.

Forbidden city (Beijing) : The public museums in Beijing, were in the past imperial palaces where no commoner or foreigner could enter without special permission. The complex had some 9000 rooms.

Fort St George (Chennai) : A factory trading post, completed on St George's day (April 23, 1640) was the nucleus from which the British empire grow. It was East Indies company's principal settlement until 1774. Outside the walls of Fort St George was George town.

Freetown (Sierra Leone) : Capital founded in 1790s as a foundation for the freed slaves. From 1808 to 1874, it was capital of British west Africa.

Gaya (Bihar) : Gaya along with Varanasi and Allahabad is one of the three most sacred sites for Hindu funeral rites.

Gaza Strip : Area 146 sq km captured by Israel from Egypt, 1967. Mostly stateless Palestinians live there in refugee camps.

Gdansk (Poland) : Industrial port. Lech Walesa, an electrician here, rose to become President of Poland.

KAILAS MANASAROVAR (CHINA) - Pithorgarh (642 km from Delhi) to Tawaghat by bus (120 km, 914 m). Trek to Pangu (9 km, 2238 m), Sirka (9 km), Gipti (16 km), Buddhi (17 km, 2740 m), Kathi - Gunji (17 km, 3200 m), Kalapani (8 km, 3600 m), Samchan (9 km), Navidhang (4200 m), Lipu le (5122 m, 5 hour) : 100 km, 7 days. Cross the border and reach Taklakot (4600 m, Tibet) and to Manasarovar lake (4530 m) by Jeep. Mount Kailash (6740 m) parikrama via Dolma la (5700 m) by trek/over Yak : 3 days. This trek is severe, expensive and difficult. Limited Visas - Annually 600 to 700 Indians attends the yatra, refer government advertisement on popular dailies : 30 days. Tour cost Rs. 60,000/- ( in 2004). Season : April to October.

Another route to Kailas Manasarovar is from Kathmandu via Friendship bridge at Nepal border. Drive Kathmandu to Nyalamu (3800 m, 165 km, 8 hour) via Zangmu. Then to Yak Kharka (4675 m, 240 km, 9 hour) via Lalung La Pass (5050 m) and Paiku Tso. Drive Yak Kharka to New Dongpa (4500 m, 160 km, 6 hour) via Saga (4640 m). Drive to Mayumla phedi
(4500 m, 210 km, 7 hour). Drive to Manasarovar (4560 m, 120 km, 8 hour). Manasarovar parikrama in Landcruiser. Drive to Darchen (4560 m). Start Kailash Parikarma (3 day trek, 54 km) from your campsite to Dira Puk (4775 m, 14 km, 6 hour) following the Lha Chu stream. Continue Parikarma over Dolma La Pass (5636 m) to Zuthul Puk (4700 m, 22 km, 10 hour). Just below the Dolma la is the Gauri Kund. Trek to Darchen (14 km , 4 hour). Drive to Hore and then to Kathmandu : 15 days, 2400 km.

Hyderabad (India) : Char Minar built by Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah (1591) is the principal landmark. Buddha statue, Hussain sagar lake, Golconda fort, Ramoji film city and Salar Jung musuem etc are other attractions of the city.

Jaipur (India) : The 'City of Victory' was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II. Included on the popular tourist 'Golden Triangle' of Delhi - Agra - Jaipur. The 'Pink City', its palaces forts and museums are elegant.

Jallianwalabagh (India) : Where Gen REH Dyer opened fire on an unarmed assembly of people of Amritsar, who were protesting against Rowlatt act. Number of deaths 379, wounded 1208.

Junagadh (Gujrat) : One of the three princely states that didn't accede to Inidan Union in 1947. It was annexed to India on Nov 9, 1948. Girnar hill Jain temples is the chief attraction.

Kalinga (Orissa, India) : Emperor Ashoka who crushed the Kalingan kingdom at Dhauligiri near Bhubaneshwar (261 BC) was shocked by the horrors of war and converted to buddhism.
