Default Boys girls puzzle solution

The proportion is 1:1, because in every birth there's a 50% for each. To convience you:
1/2 of the families have 1 boy.
1/4 have 1 girl + 1 boy.
1/8 have 2 girls + 1 boy.
1/16 have 3 girls + 1 boy.
and so on.
So If N is the number of families, the total number of boys is:
(1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 ...) N = N
Which is obvious since every familiy has 1 boy.
The total number of girls is:
(1/4 + 2* 1/8 + 3* 1/16 + ) N = N.

climbing snail reply:

well you have to think of it as going up one everyday until it hit 16 in which the next day it would reach the top so the answer must be 17... i think.
