Default Directions For Making A Quilt Design Wall

• The first consideration, in context of making a quilt design wall, would be the size of the wall. You need to remember that the larger the area of the wall that you want to use for the purpose, the bigger you would be able to make the design wall.

* The next step will comprise of deciding whether you want the design wall to be fixed or portable. In case of portable wall, you would have to sacrifice on the size a bit. You also need to make sure that the wall is such that it allows you to analyze a design from at least eight feet away.

* In this step, you will have to decide about the fabric for the design wall. It is advisable not to go for a fabric that is too heavy or has too much weight. In case the design wall is big enough to need seaming together of the fabrics, using a flannel sheet is an option.

* Depending upon the size of the design wall, you will have to buy fabric, for both the front and the back of the wall. In most of the cases, same fabric is used for front and back. After cutting down the fabric, it would be a good idea to give it a thorough wash.

* After the fabric, it will be the batting that you would be required to pay attention to. In this context, cotton batting can be regarded as the best choice. Since it does not hold heat, it remains cool in water. At the same time, its air trapping ability helps it keep warm in winter nights.

* Now, you will start with the actual work of making the quilt design wall. For the purpose, you will first need to stick together the three layers required for making the quilt - front, back and batting. You can make use of safety pins for the purpose.

* Stitch on the vertical, marked line down the center of the fabric, with the help of a walking foot. Thereafter, continue sewing vertical lines out to the rim of the fabric. After this is done, it is the time to horizontal lines in the same manner.

* Following the sewing of vertical as well as the horizontal lines, you will be required to straighten and square the edges. With this, the design wall is ready to be hung and be made use of.

* The final step will comprise of placing pieces of fabrics, blocks or quilt tops on the design wall. This will help bring the corners and boundaries in order with the stitching lines.
