Default Problems with microphone in unix/linux

Hi!
Im having problems with my microphone in ubuntu (had problems in gOS too, but not in windows vista). I have fiddled with the mixer controls like microphone boost and stuff like that but not going anywhere.

I think that it has soemthing to do with my alsa/oss drivers or something and I am totally stuck, anyone got any suggestions on what to do?

Oh and im having problem with focus and keybinding in ventrilo and i heard of ventriloctrl but i cant get it to work (dont know how really) so post replys on that too if you know anything please
