Honduras is largest country in Cenral America after Nicaragua (which borders it to the south) and remains one of the travel industry's best kept secrets.
Affordable and inexpensive, the country is a tropical paradise rich in scenic wonders, as well as Mayan historical treasures, and lays claim to some of the Caribbean's most beautiful beaches — such as those found on the Bay Islands of Roatan, Guanaja and Utila — offering world class surfing and diving, or just lazy beach-bumming along the shore.
For ecotourism and adventure travel, Honduras is one of the best locations in the world for jungle hiking, such as in the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve and other Honduras national parks that make up the largest unspoiled rainforest north of the Amazon in Brazil.
Honduras also provides much interest for those seeking out historical treasure, in such colonial towns as Santa Rosa de Copan featuring a compact look at both the country's 17th century Spanish colonial heritage as well as more ancient Mayan ruins.
Spanish is the main language spoken throughout the country, although English is more often heard spoken by friendly locals at main attractions and in the larger cities catering to tourists, such as Tegucigalpa, the capital city that serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the country.
Suggested day trips from the capital include picturesque Santa Lucia, and the old colonial capital of Comayagua. |
