With most of the Sun Pictures’ previous films turning to be mediocre, the expectations weren’t actually more for this film ‘Singam’. In spite of promoting the film to a greater extent, the audiences had perceived this film to be yet another mass commercial film. Of course, ‘Singam’ is one such film but with a different treatment.
Trust us! ‘Singam’ is the best film of this season as the duo combo Hari-Surya is back together with a hat trick now. Singam has more reasons to watch as the film goes inclusive of entertaining elements. You have everything you expect from a good commercial entertainer.
Good work by Hari as the director has carefully penned an interesting screenplay and catchy plot with lots of raciness existing throughout the show.
The film is yet another cat and mouse game between goodie and baddie, but with a different treatment.
Durai Singam (Surya), a sincere and good police in Nallore takes up this job mainly because of his father insisting him to do. But he is as keen on taking up the cases as a family affair and puts them to an end with his gentle gestures. Then there is cute girl Kavya (Anushka) along with her sister Divya (Priya) – daughters of topmost businessman (Nasser). Kavya falls in love with Singam for his acts and even he reciprocates it.
But then, trouble comes in the form of Mayil Vaaganam (Prakash Raj), a big shot in Chennai ruining the lives of people by demanding ransom money by kidnapping their children. The initial level of clash ensues in the transfer of Durai Singam to Chennai and the clash continues between two of them.
What forms next is Singam making sure that he puts an end to his bad activities.
Firstly, Hari deserves all praises for his outstanding nature of screenplay. Starting from the very first scene, the audiences wouldn’t miss even a single shot as every scene is mind-boggling. Maybe, little heroism in lines and action sequences may get on for a disregard, but the fast-paced screenplay is really the best. Surya wins the appreciations as a mass-oriented cop. He is good at his mannerisms and proves himself as a commercial hero as well. Anushka, the hottie gets more scope to perform here unlike her other films where she used to appear for songs and later disappear.
Prakash Raj’s yet another best show after Ghilli as he gets equally powerful role as Surya. At many parts, he wins claps and whistles for his lines and body languages. Viveks comedy tracks are enjoyable and the performances of Radha Ravi, Nasser and Nizhalgal Ravi is justifying.
Musical score by Devi Sri Prasad is fantastic and the song ‘Kadhal Vandhale’ wins the applause. Cinematography is good at parts and editing adds more speed to the narration.
On the flip side, the stunts sequences are bit unbelievable as Surya steps into the shoes of Vijay as they break stones and poles apart with their fist of anger.
But the second half has such an interesting screenplay that every audience would be on the edge of their seats.
If you’re ready to bear few illogical factors like the stunt sequences, you will surely enjoy this film.
Make sure, you don’t miss it as Singam can be the best treat for this summer. Sun Pictures should have released this film by April itself instead of preferring Vijay’s Sura.
As of now, the film will win more profits than Surya’s previous film ‘Ayan’ itself and Sun Pictures can be happy about it.

Suriya’s Hari directed Singam, does not roar, it grunts! The film is watchable in parts only due to the awesome performance of Suriya, as a mass action hero cop. Hari is one director who refuses to move away from the comforts of the formula, and believes that he can go on rehashing his earlier films.

Good guys among the criminals are treated to his home made Sambar, bad guys get his bullets. Enter Dorai Singam (Suriya) a no-nonsense sub-inspector at Nallur police station in Tirunelveli district, who never wanted to be a cop and would have preferred to run the family provision store. He joined the force as his father (Radha Ravi), always had high regards for the police force. The villagers love him and will do anything for him because he is upright and fair in all his dealings.

On the other side of the coin is Mayilvahanam (Prakash Raj), an extortionist, kidnapper, runs ‘Kata Panchayat’ and also runs a real estate mafia in Tiruvanmayur area of Chennai. When one of his deals backfires, Mayilvahanam is forced to come and report to Dorai Singam at the Nallur police station and sparks fly.

The Chennai don using his political clout has Dorai Singam promoted as Inspector and transferred to Tiruvanmayur police station in Chennai. A cat and mouse game ensues between Singam and Mayil, leading to a lot of twists and turns. And to assist him and do the comedy track there is ‘Eatu’ Erimalai (Vivek)

The enmity between the two principal characters which started in Nallur travels to Chennai and ends in a bloody climax in Nellore. The film is racy at 2 hours and 35 minutes, and packaged as a mass masala entertainer.

Needless to say seeing the valor and courage of Dorai Singam, Kavya (Anushka), a girl from Chennai and daughter of industrialist Mahalingam (Nasser) falls head over heels in love with him.

Every scene and even dialogues and reactions from the supporting cast are predictable. Hari is obsessed showing a happy joint family in the first half, romance as usual is city girl falling for macho rural guy, even the song placements are exactly the same as his earlier films.

Devi Sri Prasad’s music is serviceable, with “Stole my heart” being the best of the lot, though Hari’s picturisation is the same like his earlier films. The action scenes are well choreographed by Rocky Rajesh, especially the theatre fight and running chase scene between Suriya and Besant Nagar Ravi. Priyan has done well by trying to frame the hero and the lanky heroine in one frame.

Of the performers Prakash Raj is becoming a ham villain, he needs urgently to reinvent himself and add more bite and character to his villain roles. Anushka is there only for glamour and songs, but does a decent job. Hari’s regular supporting cast including his father-in-law Vijayakumar is adequate.

Ultimately it is Suriya who carries the film to the winning post. His passion and the way he brings an ordinary regular larger-than-life hero character alive on screen is lesson for other commercial heroes. On the whole, it is a predictable entertainer that follows the age old formula, which might appeal to viewers who finds comfort in mass masala entertainers. Watch it only for Suriya. He is in top form.

ഇക്കഴിഞ്ഞ റിലീസായ ‘സുറാ’ തന്നെ ഉദാഹരണം. താരപ്പകിട്ട് ബൂസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യാന്* വേണ്ടിമാത്രം സൃഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഇത്തരം സിനിമകള്* സണ്* പിക്ചേഴ്സിന്*റെ വിശ്വാസ്യത തകര്*ക്കാനേ ഉപകരിക്കൂ. എന്തായാലും ഈ മുന്**വിധി ഉള്ളിലുള്ളതുകൊണ്ട് സണ്* പിക്ചേഴ്സിന്*റെ പുതിയ ചിത്രമായ ‘സിങ്കം’ കാണാന്* പോകുമ്പോള്* അധികം പ്രതീക്ഷ വച്ചുപുലര്*ത്തിയിരുന്നില്ല. എന്നാല്*, ഇത് ചിത്രം വേറെയാണ്. ഗില്ലിക്കു ശേഷം, സാമിക്ക് ശേഷം, ഗജിനിക്ക് ശേഷം ഒരു ബിഗ് കൊമേഴ്സ്യല്* ആക്ഷന്* എന്*റര്*ടെയ്നര്* - അതാണ് സിങ്കം!

സംവിധായകന്* ഹരി ഈ ചിത്രം ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത് കെട്ടുറപ്പുള്ള ഒരു തിരക്കഥയിന്**മേലാണ്. സൂര്യയുടെ വണ്**മാന്* ഷോയ്ക്കല്ല, കഥയ്ക്കാണ് പ്രധാനം. നായകന്*റെ അലറിവിളിയും ആഘോഷവുമൊന്നുമല്ല. ഒരു കഥ വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ട്രീറ്റ്മെന്*റ് നല്*കി പ്രേക്ഷകരിലെത്തിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ്. ഈ ആക്ഷന്* ഡ്രാമ അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ കാഴ്ചക്കാരെ ത്രില്ലടിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ആദ്യപകുതിയിലെ ലൈറ്റ് ഗോയിംഗ് പിന്നീട് പതിയെ മാറുകയാ*ണ്. സെക്കന്*റ് ഹാഫില്* സിംഹം ഗര്*ജ്ജിക്കുക തന്നെ ചെയ്യുന്നു.

നെല്ലൂര്* എന്ന ചെറുപട്ടണത്തിലെ ഇന്*സ്പെക്ടറാണ് ദുരൈ*സിങ്കം(സൂര്യ). അച്ഛന്*റെ ആഗ്രഹപ്രകാരം പൊലീസ് യൂണിഫോം അണിയാന്* വിധിക്കപ്പെട്ടവന്*. സത്യസന്ധനായ, ശാന്തസ്വഭാവമുള്ള ഒരു പൊലീസുകാരനാണ് അയാള്*. ബിസിനസുകാരനായ നാസറിന്*റെ മക്കള്* കാവ്യ(അനുഷ്ക)യും അനുജത്തി ദിവ്യ(പ്രിയ)യും വെക്കേഷന് നെല്ലൂരിലെത്തുകയാണ്. കാവ്യയും ദുരൈസിങ്കവും പ്രണയത്തിലാകുന്നു. കാര്യങ്ങള്* അങ്ങനെ സുഗമമായി പോകുന്നതിനിടയിലാണ് മയില്**വാഹനം(പ്രകാശ്*രാജ്) എന്ന കൊടിയ വില്ലന്*റെ വരവ്.

പിന്നീട് കാണുന്നത് നന്**മയും തിന്**മയും തമ്മിലുള്ള ‘ക്യാറ്റ് ആന്*റ് മൌസ്’ ഗെയിമാണ്. ശാന്തത വെടിഞ്ഞ് ദുരൈസിങ്കം രൌദ്രഭാവം അണിയുന്നു. നെല്ലൂരില്* നിന്ന് ചെന്നൈയിലേക്ക് സ്ഥലം മാറ്റപ്പെട്ട ദുരൈസിങ്കം അവിടെയും മയില്**വാഹനത്തിനെതിരായ പോരാട്ടം തുടരുകയാണ്.

ഒരു എഡ്ജ് ഓഫ് സീറ്റ് ത്രില്ലറാണ് ഇത്തവണ ഹരി ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഹരിയുടെ മുന്**ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ പാളിച്ചകളൊക്കെ ഈ ഒറ്റച്ചിത്രത്താല്* മറക്കപ്പെടും. മാസിനെ തൃപ്തിപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ഘടകങ്ങളൊക്കെ അതിഭാവുകത്വമില്ലാതെ തിരക്കഥയിലുള്*പ്പെടുത്തിയതാണ് ഹരിയുടെ വിജയം. സൂര്യയുമൊത്ത് ആറ്, വേല്* എന്നീ സിനിമകള്* ഹരി മുമ്പ് ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്നാല്* ഹരിയുടെ കരിയറിലെ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച സിനിമ സിങ്കം തന്നെയാണ്.

‘ഗ്ലാമറിനുവേണ്ടി മാത്രം നായിക’ എന്ന പതിവ് സങ്കല്*പ്പത്തെയും ഹരി തെറ്റിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് ഈ സിനിമയില്*. അനുഷ്ക അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കാവ്യ എന്ന കാഥാപാത്രം ചിത്രത്തില്* ശക്തമായ സാന്നിധ്യമാണ്. പ്രകാശ്*രാജിന്*റെ പ്രകടനവും എടുത്തുപറയണം. ഗില്ലിക്ക് ശേഷം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്*റെ ഒരു പവര്**ഫുള്* പെര്*ഫോമന്*സ് ഈ സിനിമയിലാണുള്ളത്. പല സീനിലും സൂര്യയേക്കാള്* കൈയടി പ്രകാശിന് ലഭിക്കുന്നു.

സൂര്യ എന്ന നടന്*റെ കൊമേഴ്സ്യല്* സ്വീകാര്യത ഉറപ്പിക്കുന്ന സിനിമയാണ് സിങ്കം. ആക്ഷന്* - സോംഗ് - പ്രണയ രംഗങ്ങളില്* മാത്രമല്ല, ഇമോഷണല്* സീനുകളും ഗംഭീരമാക്കിയിരിക്കുകയാണ് ഈ നടന്*. കലയെന്നോ കച്ചവടമെന്നോ ഉള്ള വ്യത്യാസമില്ലാതെ അഭിനയത്തെ ആത്മാര്*ത്ഥതയോടെ സമീപിക്കുന്ന സൂര്യ സിങ്കത്തിന്*റെ വിജയത്തോടെ കൂടുതല്* ഉയരത്തിലെത്തുമെന്ന് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാം. സൂര്യയുടെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഹിറ്റായ ‘അയന്*’ നേടിയ കളക്ഷന്* സിങ്കം പഴങ്കഥയാക്കുമെന്ന് ഉറപ്പ്.

വിവേകിന്*റെ കോമഡി ട്രാക്കും ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. എന്നാല്* അദ്ദേഹം പതിവുരീതികളില്* നിന്ന് വ്യതിചലിക്കാത്തത് മടുപ്പുളവാക്കും. ഗാനരംഗങ്ങളാണ് ചിത്രത്തിന്*റെ മറ്റൊരു ഹൈലൈറ്റ്. ദേവിശ്രീ പ്രസാദ് ഒരുക്കിയ ഗാനങ്ങള്* മികച്ചതാണ്. ‘കാതല്* വന്താലേ’ എന്ന ഗാനം മനോഹരം.

ഈ സമ്മറില്* ഒരു മികച്ച എന്*റര്*ടെയ്നര്* ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നവര്*ക്ക് സിങ്കം കളിക്കുന്ന തിയേറ്ററില്* ധൈര്യമായി പോകാം. ഇളയദളപതിയുടെ മസാലച്ചിത്രങ്ങളില്* മനം മടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നവര്*ക്ക് ഈ പുതിയ സൂര്യാവതാരം അനുഗ്രഹം തന്നെയായിരിക്കും.
