Default Should India form an alliance with United States?

    HI,
If anyone is carefully watching world politics these days one thing you will definitely notice is the growing relationship between India and the United States. I don't understand why all of a sudden US started being nice to India. One example I would like to mention is co-operation in Nuclear Technology which America never gives away to anyone. Another noteworthy example can be the sale of advanced defense equipment to India.

One thing I reckon for this could be a possible threat from military power house China. A future war between Taiwan and China is inevitable. America supports Taiwan and also it doesn't have a military base anywhere near China. If US can get a military base in India, which India refused till date, then it will be easy for them when a war happens between Taiwan and China. They can attack China from India. I think this could be one of the reason as a future war between China and Taiwan and China and US is inevitable. Or, is it because US plans to make India a counter weight to China?

Relations between India and China are picking up and they are going to a next level. I reckon India will not support US if a war between US and China occurs.

Any views on this topic will be appreciated.

The United States has so many allies, but what have our allies done to help us. When we went to Iraq, only UK and Australia helped. Australia for crying out loud!!! They had to fly halfway around the globe to help us. The French could have gotten there in a minute with their Concord.

So back to India, they could easily call themselves "allies with the US" so they can get help from the most powerful country in the world. But will they keep their end of the deal? I say leave India alone. But if we are trying to make alliances with India so we can have our troops in Asia, by China and North Korea, I think thats a waste of time and money. We already control Afghanistan and have strong alliances with South Korea, why another Asian country?

what are you talking about dude.theres no way India would allow US troops inside the country, its impossible.Alliance can be formed only on loose basis as exchange of arms etc. and sometimes help in war.But India will never allow troops inside. They already have objection to US troops in the indian ocean some island i forgot...yeah Diego Garcia or something like that.India will be against.

And US is very keen to make India an ally.I feel.

First off I wouldn't count on any new wars anytime soon. China is a communist country but McCarthy-ism is dead. Our relations with China are not even to the point of being stressed. Sure we're a little concerned about their huge military budget, and sure we're concerned about the inevitable territory stake with Tawian, but China isn't stupid. An invasion of Tawain would not be taken lightly in the world. It wouldn't just be the US stepping in at that point.

As for your original question, I think it's absurd to form an alliance with a country because A: They're a nuclear power B: They have a close land base. If a war with China starts it won't be because we started it. It will likely be them invading Taiwan and the world looking to it. Don't think for a second Japan and the Korean nations wouldn't be biting their nails and open their arms to a few extra UN or NATO troops. India would likely follow suit.

You also have to consider our relations in the middle east. Pakistan and India don't exactly have tea together everyday. Forming an alliance with India would slap one of our greatest allies in the middle east in the face.

I think India has more power and efficiency and next decade India maybe more important than Japan.
And if China can develope and will be equal to US.
US must have alliance with more power country like India.
(and I think US want to attack Myanmar. that's large benefit if US have allied with India)

    P.S. I voted for maybe..

Default Tricky question indeed - a complex world politics

I have a huge interest in world poilitics but know the minimal about it. But the topic is so interesting that it can't be left unreplied.

Why should US form an alliance with India? It is already having control over Afganistan and Pakistan (don't feel that Pak is in a position to say "No" to any of the US demands.). So, if it wants to make a base over there, none but India and China would be the first two countries to oppose it. In International Political terms, this can be rephrased as - It will affect the regional balance.

Let me focus some major points related to our context.

    1) China and US share very huge mutual economical interests. Its not easy to attack a country with which you have your ties. It is always your people whom you have to answer back home.

    2) Now a days, no one dreams of a war between two Nuclear capable countries.

    3) In 21st centuary, there are different kind of war that we fight. Take the example of US - USSR war. They call it cold war. No blodshed. Still US defeated USSR. So, even though cold war is over, lot many these kinds of war are going on.

    4) Russia - China - India. They are working towards making a common front. I don't know what they call it. But surely, it is as a deterrant against US.

    5) Word politics have changed after the emergence of globalization. If you take one decision, it is going to have multi-dimensional effect over everything.

Similarly, there are lot many points. Its Not attack on Taiwan - or attack on China... it's a matter of past... I hope that there are much more intelligent ways to defeat a country instead of chosing an option of military attack.

    Default Ignorance is Bliss

Never know for sure what the people in power are up to. I don't think the US would have plans to attack China. If there were to be another global war there would naurally be sides taken. But I think even the most obtuse leader realizes another Global war would lead to the desturction of Earth and hey guess what no more fighting! We'd all be gone.

What do you want in life? I want to live, love, laugh and be happy. I want an earth for my grandchildren's children to grow up upon. I think a lot of people in other country's want the same thing. So, naive, why can't we get along?

A lot of US citizens are concerned with economic conditions in India. See ads all the time "help the starving children" and people donate their money. Don't actually know what conditions are like, except when talking to a native of the country. Don't know if the funds actually help the children.

Gandhi (who inadvertenly started a civil war) said "whatever you do may seem insignificant, but important that you do it" and "BE the change you want to see in the world". A bumper sticker read "If the people lead, the leader's will follow". Don't know if that will work. But worth a try.

So my answer is 'don't know'.

    PEACE!
