Need for Speed II Special Edition

The idea of a sequel to The Need forSpeed should create many people happy. Later everything, who did notlove the thrill of racing down few of the most beautiful stretches ofroad in the world - roads made for cool sports cars that wouldfulfill our need for speed, as well if that darned state trooper inthe Mustang acquired in the way.

Yep, Need for Speed II should certainlybe a treat. And on the promise of a faster 3-D engine, courses on 50percent greater detail, customization and performance setups, and anumber of other new options, this should truly be awesome.

And it is - if you have the advocatedPentium 166. Anything slower forces you to set the resolution low andmaybe turn off the horizon to get an acceptable frame rate. Even so,the ground textures begin to synchronize at higher speeds, bringingaway the feeling of velocity on long stretches of open road. It maybe that 50 percent greater detail comes at some performance cost, ormay be that cost is the result of developing for Windows 95 just.

While each track locale can be guessedby its name - Pacific Spirit, Mediteraneo, The Outback - and they aresurely places that you would need to drive one of these dreammachines, they do not feel as any road on my planet. Certainly, youacquire the twists, turns, peaks, and valleys as you would require, and of course there is few embellishment to create them moreinteresting. But what was truly enjoyable in the original was thebalance between surreal and real roads.

Most of the roads in NFS II are toohorrific that they look to belong to in Monster Truck Madness, not asimulation of cars with relatively little clearance and stiffsuspensions that do not perform so well over cobblestones and jumps.Even the cars this time around are way out on the fringes offamiliarity. Unless you have been to an auto display lately, you haveprobably never watched any of these machines. Avowedly, they are funto drive, but none of them are what most of us would consider withinreach, which interferes with what the original NFS did thusconsiderable - supply a sense of immersion and the suspension ofdisbelief.

Few might also be disappointed to findthat the cop has been brought out fully, and all of the tracks arecircuits - there are no more linear roads with checkpoints. Thesewere characteristics that made the original game more realistic - andunique. There are two racing modes to select from, Arcade andSimulation. The Arcade mode ameliorates managing well, but Simulationdoes not afford the proper sense of realism. Managing any of the carsin Simulation mode can be a harried affair, as the controls are jerkywhen steering and breaking.

What makes it push towards the SIMslope of the spectrum is the varied performance of the different carsand their engine sounds. Lacking a true-to-life physics model, still, creates it very arcade. NFS II is plagued by few of the same troublesthat create it difficult to call this series a driving "simulation."It sort of fits snugly between, say, Virgin's Screamer 2 and any ofthe true racing SIMs on the market.
