Mouth Ulcers are develop inside the mouth, they are open small oval sores and red in colour. They are commonly found inside the lips, inner part of the cheeks, under the tongue or on the soft palate. This type of ulcer is not contagious and usually disappears after a couple of weeks. Mouth Ulcers are also known as ‘canker sores’ or ‘aphthous ulcers’. The first sign of the sore may be a tingling, burning sensation inside the mouth. They can occur either singly or in clusters.
When the condition of Ulcers becomes very severe, the affected person cannot drink or eat anything. This condition can be causes inflammation of the mouth.

Causes of Mouth Ulcers


The root causes of Mouth Ulcers are:

Deficiency of Vitamin B Complex and folic acid.
Having diseases related to Gastrointestinal system.
Excessive intake of acidic or spicy food.
Viral infections.
Constipation.
Smoking and drinking alcohol are chemical irritants of canker sores or Mouth Ulcers.
Poor dental hygiene.
Biting of cheeks or lips.
Food allergies.
Stress can also cause these sores. Vitamin B helps the body deal with stress conditions.

Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers


Some effective Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers are:

Mix a pinch of turmeric powder to a teaspoonful of glycerin and apply on the ulcers.
Take about 4-5 leaves of some holy basil leaves and in the morning chew them. It helps in curing mouth ulcers and preventing bad smell from the mouth.
Make some paste of amla (known as Indian Gooseberry) and apply in the ulcers 2 to 3 times in day.
Apply peppermint oil on the ulcers; this will relieve you from the irritation and pain.
Gargle at least 3-4 times in a day with fresh coconut milk.
Deficiency of Vitamin C can lead to mouth ulcer so drink lot of orange juice.
Eat lot of raw salad especially raw onions. Onion contains lot of sulfur and it is effective in treating mouth ulcers.
Make a solution of about 2 oz. of hydrogen peroxide, about 2 oz of water, a tablespoonful of salt as well as baking soda. Rinse the mouth with it but do not swallow it.
To 1 cup of water add 1tsp of coriander seeds, heat it till warm. Strain it and gargle with the solution 3-4 times a day.
Boil 2 cups of water. Add 1 cup fenugreek leaves and remove. Cover and keep for some time. Strain the water and gargle 2-3 times a day.
Mix 7 parts of sugar candy (mishri) with 1 part of camphor. Apply on the blister.
Keep 1 glass of chilled water and 1 glass of hot water ready at hand. Gargle alternately with hot and cold water.

Mouth Ulcers Treatment and Advice

Avoid spicy or oily food.
Eat lot of yogurt, buttermilk and cottage cheese.
Avoid eating sharp edged food like dry bread or potato chips. Also avoid lozenges, chewing gums, coffee, tobacco and any food which you think can trigger ulcer formation.
Do not drink too much coffee.
Eat Salads.
