The LBS Centre for Science and Technology has invited applications for the State Eligibility Test (SET) to be held on September 30. The centres will be in all district headquarters. Clearing the test is a mandatory requirement for appointment as higher secondary school teachers in the State.

The test has two papers. Paper I is common for all applicants. Part A of it will have questions to test general knowledge and Part B teaching aptitude. Paper II will have questions on the subject of specialisation at the postgraduate level.

The subjects are Anthropology, Arabic, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, English, French, Gandhian Studies, Geography, Geology, German, Hindi, History, Home Science, Islamic History, Journalism, Kannada, Latin, Malayalam, Mathematics, Music, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Russian, Sanskrit, Social Work, Sociology, Statistics, Syriac, Tamil, Urdu and Zoology.

Each paper, with only multiple-choice objective type questions, will be of two hours. Paper 1 will have 120 questions, 60 each for the two parts and each carrying one mark. Paper II, except in the cases of Mathematics and Statistics, will have 120 questions, each carrying one mark. Mathematics and Statistics will have 80 questions carrying 1.5 marks each.

For every wrong answer, one-fourth of a mark will be deducted from the total marks. At least 35 per cent marks should be scored for both papers separately and at least 50 per cent in aggregate to pass the test.

Eligibility

Those who have a Master’s degree in any of the subjects listed with not less than 50 per cent marks and a B.Ed. degree from any of the universities in Kerala or equivalent may apply for the test. There is no age limit. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes require only 45 per cent marks.

For Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology, those having an M.Sc. Ed. degree with not less than 50 per cent marks from the Regional Institute of Education may also apply.

For Anthropology, Commerce, French, Gandhian Studies, Geology, German, Home Science, Journalism, Latin, Music, Philosophy, Psychology, Russian, Social Work, Sociology, Statistics and Syriac, B.Ed. degree is not required.

Those who have a Master’s degree in Communicative English with not less than 50 per cent marks and B.Ed. may take the test in the subject English.

Those with a diploma in Hindi Teaching but no B.Ed. may apply. Final year or semester postgraduate and B.Ed. students may apply.

How to apply

Application is a two-step process. The first step is to register online on LBS Centre for Science & Technology or LBS Centre for Science & Technology by clicking the link SET 2012. Before doing so, obtain an application form and prospectus from select post offices on payment of Rs. 750 (Rs. 375 for those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and the visually and physically challenged). The application number printed on the form and date of birth have to be entered for online registration. On registration, the website generates a registration ID. Take a printout for reference.

The second step is to fill the application form and affix a recent passport-size photograph and sent it to the Director, LBS Centre for Science and Technology, Nandavanam, Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram by registered post so as to reach there on or before July 31.
