Awards don’t matter, money does: Chiranjeevi

HYDERABAD: Megastar and Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) chief Chiranjeevi appears an unhappy man these days.

Reason: his bete noire and veteran director Dasari Narayana Rao has bagged the Nandi award for displaying “best acting” skills in a film, 'Mestri', that is at best, a critic and at worst, a parody on PRP. Never mind that it bombed at the box-office.

Awards do not matter so long as films rake in the moolah, Chiru reasoned on Monday.

“We are here to entertain fans and ensure that the producer gets good returns,” he told a group of inquisitive reporters who put him the obvious question.

Is he disappointed that his son and budding star Ram Charan Teja couldn’t win a Nandi in the best actor category?

“Actors in my family are not after awards,” he asserted adding that what was more important was whether their films had got enough collections. “Awards mean very little to my family,” he claimed.

Chiranjeevi’s fans were upset that Ram Charan Teja was “ignored” while announcing Nandi awards. However, Chiranjeevi said it was for the jury members to pick award winners and felt it was not good to rake up a controversy.

On his proposed 150th film, the megastar dismissed reports that it had been titled 'Adhinayakudu' and clarified that even the script was not ready much less the title.

He also denied getting an invite from the Congress to join the State Cabinet.
