The word avatar comes from the Sanskrit word avatarah that means descend. In Hindu it is the manifestation (or incarnation) of a deity, usually Vishnu. In Hinduism, Vishnu is believed to have descended to Earth and taken the form of, among others, man, fish, tortoise, and boar. Outside of the religious realm, the term avatar has come to mean embodiment or representation. An avatar can be the embodiment of an idea or the representation of a person, as is so with computing.
