1. Do not duplicate your basic colours. Choose between black or navy or brown

2. Most mistakes result from having too many bottoms and very few tops. You need to have at least five tops for every skirt or trousers you own. People will always notice your top half more than your bottom half.

3. The first step is to figure out your lifestyle needs, and plan your wardrobe around them. Do not throw away old t-shirts or tops. If you buy another top then you can layer them over each other to create a brand new look!

4. When you start to build your basic foundation wardrobe, try to use a total lifestyle concept, which will accommodate both formal and informal wear. You should not need to have a section in your wardrobe for “smart” and another section for “casual” clothes.

5. Each item of clothing you buy must mix and match with at least three other pieces in your existing wardrobe – in that case if you have say 30 items in your closet and each of them goes with three other outfits, you will have ninety completely different combinations to wear.

6. It is far more versatile to mix and match separates than dresses, so try to limit the number of dresses in your wardrobe. You can always wear a top and skirt together to look like a dress, but they can also be coordinated with other items. This will not only save you money, but will give you many more outfits to wear.

7. Shapes of clothes need to be classically simple, pure, clean. Details also – nothing too fashiony - keep them simple.

8. If you spend most of your time in a work environment, you will be surrounded by many of the same people every day. You will want to change your look each day for them as well as for yourself.

9. You should be able to wear at least 70% of your clothes on a regular basis. The other 30% should be fashionable items.

* Black is always a good choice, as are brown, gray, navy and beige.

* Find a flattering color base : When choosing a color base, you want to focus on what practical color looks best on you. You don't have to pay a stylist or color consultant to find out. Honest friends will be able to give you the exact same information for free.

* Choose color you love: pick a color you love, even if it's not your most perfect. Much of your look is projected by how you feel. If you feel great and confident, that's how people will see you.

* If you love pinks and reds, wear a colorful scarf against a simple dress for the perfect pop of color.

* Get rid of anything that’s worn out or no longer fits

* Using what you already have and your magazine pictures create a shopping list to fill in the gaps.

Take the list with you when shopping – if you take pictures with you or write simple descriptions (like ‘soft, floaty, pretty’) rather than ‘Marcs pink short sleeved shirt’ then you’ll find it easier to keep to your budget: and you’ll also find it far less frustrating if you can’t match the picture in the magazine exactly. Remember, it’s amazing the things that can be found at low-end chain stores or vintage clothing stores.
