Michael Jackson’s doctor found guilty of manslaughter

Michael Jackson’s personal physician Conrad Murray has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the singer’s death in 2009. In a lengthy trial that lasted six-weeks, a Los Angeles County jury found Murray guilty of administering propofol to Jackson. The jury found that Murray, 58, acted with criminal negligence, which led to Jackson’s death. They rejected the argument of defence that the singer gave himself an overdose of propofol and therefore was responsible for his own death, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“This is a crime where the end result was the death of a human being. That factor demands rather dramatically that the public should be protected,” Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor said. Immediately after the verdict, Murray was placed in handcuffs. He will remain in custody pending his November 29 sentencing.
Involuntary manslaughter carries a maximum jail term of four-years. Murray is now facing his medical licenses being revoked in Texas and Nevada. The California Medical Board suspended his license earlier this year.
The verdict came on the second day of deliberations and was read to a packed courtroom that included singer’s mother Katherine, siblings Rebbie, La Toya, Randy, father Joe and fans. As a court clerk pronounced the word “guilty,” there was a gasp from the singer’s family. Jackson died at his Los Angeles mansion on June 25, 2009 at the age of 50, just three weeks before his comeback concerts ‘This Is It’ in London. Murray, Jackson’s personal physician at the time of his death, admitted giving him small dose of propofol but pleaded not guilty in the singer’s death.
