The Ladykillers

Tom Hanks leads a quirky cast in Joel and Ethan Coen's remake of Alec Guiness's 1955 comedy The Ladykillers.

Hanks plays Professor Goldthwait Higginson Dorr, a Southern professor who puts together a gang of thieves in order to rob a local casino. He and his cohorts (J.K. Simmons, Tzi Ma, Ryan Hurst and Marlon Wayans) shack up at the house of a kindly old lady, Marva Munson (Irma P. Hall) while trying to get their scheme off the ground. But when Munson finds out, Dorr decides she has to be killed, a task that turns out to be much more difficult than it seems.

Semi-Review
I don't really have the energy or gumption to write a complete review, but I'll say a few things (a little late for its theatrical release, but oh well). Tom Hanks was brilliant. I thought he came across as a shady professor quite well. There's quite a lot of profanity in the film. If you're mature enough it comes across as quite funny, although it may get old after a while. This was one of the few films that had me doubled over with laughter 95% of the time. Not only is it a good comedy, it's very atmospheric. A lot of scenes have a dark, mysterious feel to them. The end has a very satisfying feel of everything falling into place. I highly recommend it.

I had also heard recommendations to see the original 1950s British film that this is based on, so I rented that one. It wasn't nearly as funny. It's not bad for its time and genre, but it definitely won't please mainstream audiences. I'd say stick with the remake.

Its a great movie, even when someone said what happened at the end before I watched it. It was fine, I thought it was a great movie and the cast was well chosen.

If you havn't watch it you probally should. I recomend it.

Also somehow its rated 'R'... for sexual something rather and language. I only noticed the language in the movie...

While Tom Hanks acted quite well, I didn't think that they movie was all that fantastic. I think that it was lame and it didn't do what it was trying to do. I wish that I had not rented it and that I had waited until it came out on television.

I was on a plane when they were showing it on board. Watched it like 30 seconds... got bored... Turned to another channele.

I gotta get this on DVD. I heard it was a brilliant movie.

The movie held my interest for about 45 seconds. While Tom Hanks was excellent, the premise of the movie and the rest of the cast were pathetic. The "black-people-do-nothing-but-swear" concept is old, and wasn't funny when it was still new. Not worth renting unless you like lowbrow humour.
