Cricket World Cup 2011

The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup is the tenth Cricket World Cup and is being played in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. It is Bangladesh's first time co-hosting a World Cup. All matches in the World Cup will be accorded One Day International status, with all matches being played over 50 overs. Fourteen national cricket teams will compete in the tournament, including ten full members and four associate members.The World Cup will take place between February and early April 2011, with the first match played on 19 February 2011 with co-hosts India and Bangladesh facing off at the Sher-e- Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. The opening ceremony was held on 17 February 2011 at Bangabandhu National Stadium, Dhaka, two days before the start of the tournament, with the final on 2 April 2011 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

The World Cup was also supposed to be co-hosted by Pakistan, but in the wake of the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka national cricket team in Lahore, the International Cricket Council (ICC) decided to strip Pakistan of its hosting rights. The headquarters of the organising committee were originally situated in Lahore, but have now been shifted to Mumbai. Pakistan was supposed to hold 14 matches, including one semi-final. India have won the first match of the 2011 Cricket World Cup against Bangladesh by 87 runs. The Group B match was played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh.

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl first. In the Indian innings, Virender Sehwag scored the highest total, 175 runs off 140 balls, his highest one-day international score and Virat Kolhi played his debut World Cup match and scored a century, while remaining unbeaten on 100.

The first referral of the World Cup came after the 4th ball of the 2nd innings was bowled. India's Shanthakumaran Sreesanth had bowled a yorker and the umpire declared it not out. Dhoni referred it to the TV umpire and a replay showed it might have missed the leg stump, so the original decision was upheld. The match marked the debut of the controversial umpire referral system in World Cup cricket.

South Africa threw up a big surprise in their first match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 against West Indies. Not too long ago, if you told anyone South Africa played with 3 spinners on their team, you’d only hear laughter. But it looks like the Proteas are all set to try anything to win that World Cup for their trophy cabinet which has been eluding them for too long. Imran Tahir made his debut and made an instant impact. A slow and low Feroz Shah Kotla pitch didn’t play too well in West Indies’ favour as all of their top guns failed. Darren Bravo who is touted as the next Lara in West Indies cricket, showed a good mix of temperament and style to score 73. He looks like he can be a classy player. But then again, so did a lot of other West Indians.
None of the other batsmen got going and West Indies folded up for 222, with Tahir picking up for wickets on his international debut. He will be delighted.
South African run chase didn’t start off too well. They lost the two pillars that their batting has been built on for the last 12 months- Amla and Kallis- in very quick succession. West Indies looked like they were going to make a match of it. But they only flattered to deceive. Ab de Villiers and Graeme Smith provided the rescue act for South Africa and dug them out. De Villiers has averaged over 50 in his last 45 matches and he proved his class to the world yet again by scoring a brilliant century. JP Duminy got some runs under his belt too. South Africa delivered a top performance and will try their best to achieve the World Cup dream.

Shaun Tait. Brett Lee. Mitchell Johnson. The hostile fast men from Australia made an imperious statement in Nagpur. They breathed fire and New Zealand didn’t have the heart, and at least today, the skills, to extinguish them. Nathan McCullum and Daniel Vettori revived New Zealand from a disastrous 73 for 6, but a below-par 206 was not enough to avoid a crushing defeat. A flamboyant Brad Haddin and an imperious Shane Watson hit entertaining half-centuries to charge Australia home.
It was a shambolic effort from the New Zealand top order. Some of the deliveries didn’t deserve wickets but New Zealand were in the mood for self-destruction. They handled the best bowler on view, Lee, with caution and gave him just one wicket but imploded against Tait and Johnson. Both bowlers bowled enough tight deliveries to lure the batsmen into mistakes with deliveries that had some teasing width. It remains to be seen how they will fare against a better batting line-up. Will today’s wicket-taking deliveries be smashed for boundaries or will the batsmen continue to err on perceived pressure-releasing balls? Today, though, their efforts were enough to blow away New Zealand’s top order.
Brendon McCullum, who unfurled couple of fierce upper cuts against Tait, threw his bat at a full delivery well outside off, but edged it to third man. Jesse Ryder, who laced a few classy pulls against Johnson, stabbed a delivery that held its line outside off, to the wicketkeeper. James Franklin, looking out of place at No. 5, chased a wide delivery from Johnson to give Brad Haddin another catch. Scott Styris edged a wide and short delivery from Tait to Haddin and Ross Taylor played all around a full delivery from Tait to lose his off stump.
Everything that one expected from this Australian pace attack was visible today. It was expected they would either blow away the opposition or leak runs on flat tracks. Eleven fours came in the first 12 overs but the wickets too kept tumbling. Lee strangled the batsmen with his nagging line and length, Tait slung them in full and fast, Johnson went round-arm to catapult pacy deliveries and Watson was accurate enough to let the vagaries of the up-and-down track to do its bit.

Bangladesh’s bowlers held their nerve to atone for the failures of their batsman, as the pluck of the Irish proved insufficient to overcome the most fervent atmosphere of the World Cup so far. In a gripping, low-scoring encounter at Mirpur, Bangladesh flirted with disaster as they squandered a flying start from Tamim Iqbal to crash to 205 all out, and when Ireland reached 93 for 3 at the halfway mark of their reply, they were well on course for a hugely deserved victory. However, six wickets for the Bangladeshi spin quartet set the stage for a flying finish from Shafiul Islam, who claimed 4 for 21 in eight hostile and reverse-swinging overs, to seal a wildly acclaimed victory by 27 runs with five overs to spare.
The result was tough on the Irish who, like the Netherlands earlier in the week, gave the match their all and deserved a Test-playing scalp as their reward. But the belief and unity of the Bangladeshis had to be seen to be believed, as they dusted themselves down after a chastising performance with the bat, and set about defending their meagre total with skill, tenacity and some sublime commitment in the field. Mohammad Ashraful, whose mercurial batting once again let him down when the heat was on, proved a revelation with the ball, as his spin-bowling all-sorts picked up two vital wickets inside the first 19 overs, and whose subsequent celebrations imbued both his team-mates – and perhaps more crucially, a rammed and expectant Mirpur crowd – with belief.
There will be many higher-profile fixtures than this in the coming weeks, but few could prove as pivotal to the fortunes of two teams who exceeded expectations four years ago in reaching the Super Eights in the Caribbean. Ireland’s hopes of playing in the 2015 tournament hinge on their ability to produce this sort of performance in each of their next five matches, to convince the ICC that they deserve their place at the top table. But more immediately, Bangladesh’s victory gives them a real chance of pushing for a quarter-final place that their form in home internationals suggests could be attainable.

Shahid Afridi picked up four wickets as Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 11 runs in their World Cup Group A match against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

The skipper's magical spell of three for 34 came on the back of fine batting efforts by Misbah-ul-Haq (83 not out off 81 balls) and Younus Khan (72 off 76 balls), who helped Pakistan to 277 for seven in 50 overs.

Chamara Silva (57 off 79 balls) and Kumar Sangakkara (49 off 61 balls) raised hopes of a successful chase, but were undone by four quick wickets midway through the innings as Sri Lanka eventually ended on 266 for nine.

Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan were off to a solid start with Mohammed Hafeez and Kamran Akmal adding 48 in 7.2 overs after losing Ahmed Shehzad (13) early on.

Hafeez (32) was run out after a bizarre mix-up with Kamran, who was out for 39 few overs later - stumped off Rangana Herath - to leave Pakistan on 105 for three.

ICC has decided to move the India Vs England World Cup Match out of the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Cricket Board of Bengal faced humiliation due to snail’s pace of renovation work progressing at the Eden Gardens. On Thursday the ICC team carried out final inspection of the ground and declared it unfit for the World Cup matches.
The Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore has been named as the alternate venue to host the World Cup matches. The Eden Gardens was scheduled to host four World Cup matches on 27 February 2011, 15 March 2011, 18 March 2011 and 20 March 2011. CAB already missed two deadlines given by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The ICC Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat said, “Regrettably, Eden Gardens has not made sufficient progress to justify the level of confidence required to confirm that the venue would be ready in good time.” “All venues had ample time in which to prepare for World Cup matches," he added.
The ICC decision disappointed the cricket fans of Kolkata, who were expected to watch the intense and exciting India Vs England World Cup match. The ICC move also surprised the CAB bosses as they were confident of getting the stadium ready in time.

Today’s day game featured the battle between Zimbabwe and Canada from the Group A. And Zimbabwe have defeated Canada comprehensively by a whopping margin of 175 runs.
Tatenda Taibu and Craig Ervine outshone other batsmen as they did the bulk of the scoring. Batting first, Zimbabwe made 298/9 in 50 overs with Taibu hitting 98 (off 99 balls) and Ervine scoring a quick 85 (off 81 deliveries). Unfortunately, both batsmen failed to cross the 3-figure mark.
Canada bowled decently giving away only 4 extras and also striking early blows. However, the 181-run partnership between Taibu and Ervine took the match away from the Canadians. Sean Williams (30), Prosper Utseya (22) and Graeme Cremer (26) provided some handy contributions lower down the order. Amongst the Canadian bowlers, Balaji Rao was the pick of the lot grabbing 4 wickets for the team.
Chasing Zimbabwean score of 298, Canada got bowled out for a paltry score of 123. Zubin Surkari who made 26 was the highest scorer of the side. Zimbabwean bowlers bowled as a unit with Ray Price and Graeme Cremer picking up 3 wickets each. Prosper Utseya and Greg Lamb claimed 2 wickets each.

If England sort out their bowling woes, they will go from being amongst the good sides in the World Cup to being a formidable one.

Ireland: Ireland gave Bangladesh the fright of their lives, but ultimately could not keep up and ended up losing their first tie. They will have seen how the Indian batsmen and the Netherlands batsmen handled the English bowlers and are sure to take tips from that. Ireland will go in with one major psychological advantage over England: They have nothing to lose, and England have everything to lose if the result of the match is not a big victory for England. By having no pressure, Ireland can play more freely.

New Zealand became the second team to achieve two 10-wicket wins at a World Cup as Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum comfortably led them home against Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad.

Chasing a mere 163, Black Caps openers Guptil (86 off 108 balls) and McCullum (76 off 95 balls) chalked off the required runs in 33.3 overs, after Zimbabwe's batting was decimated by paceman Tim Southee's three for 29 and two wickets each from Daniel Vettori and Kyle Mills.

New Zealand had begun their current World Cup campaign with a similar margin of victory over Kenya and following a disappointing seven-wicket loss to Australia, this latest success puts them back in contention for qualification from Group A.

Zimbabwe were in trouble almost from the off when Hamish Bennett ran out Charles Coventry (0) with a direct hit in the second over, while the dangerous Tatenda Taibu (8) was dropped at cover by captain Vettori off Southee but fell lbw to the very next delivery.

The recovery lasted all of 15 runs as Craig Ervine (11) slashed Mills straight to Jesse Ryder at backward point.

And Vettori more than made amends for his earlier miss by despatching counterpart Elton Chigumbura (1) and Regis Chakabva (0) in his first over.

West Indies beat Bangladesh comprehensively at Mirpur in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

It was one of those days where as a home team supporter, you’d have questioned yourself if your team deserves to host a World Cup.

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first in front of their home crowd. This time, their opening pair didn’t click as Tamim Iqbal was dismissed in the first over of the match off an edge that flew to Darren Sammy off the bowling of Kemar Roach, who is having a wonderful World Cup 2011 so far. There were no hints of a consolidation as Roach and Sammy ran through the Bangladeshi top order one after the other. Bangladesh slumped to 36-4. 5 runs and 2 overs later, captain Shakib Al Hasan was clean bowled by Benn and the match completely folded for Bangladesh. Sulaiman Benn finished with 4-18 in 5.5 overs. Kemar Roach and Darren Sammy finished with 3-19 and 3-21 respectively and those were all the bowlers needed for the West Indies as they bowled the hosts out for a hapless 58 runs in the 19th over.

Bangadesh’s woeful performance with the bat gave them absolutely nothing to defend and West Indies knocked the runs off in the 13th over, although they lost one consolation wicket of Devon Smith to Naeem Islam who returned figures of 1-14 in 6 overs. No one else could manage the Gayle onslaught and West Indies took home a massive victory that puts them in a good position in the group and beaming with confidence before their game against Ireland.

Ross Taylor's terrific unbeaten century set up New Zealand's comprehensive 110-run victory over Pakistan in their World Cup Group A match in Pallekele today.

Birthday boy Taylor scored 131 off 124 balls and in a late blitz added 84 in 22 balls with Jacob Oram (25 off nine) as New Zealand blasted 100 off last five overs to reach 302 for seven.

Pakistan's chase was derailed after half the side were dismissed inside 15 overs, with paceman Tim Southee picking up three, but Abdul Razzaq (62 off 74) gave the former champions a flicker of hope before they were eventually dismissed for 192 in under 42 overs.

Batting first after winning the toss, New Zealand lost Brendon McCullum and Jamie How cheaply but Martin Guptill and Taylor guided them past 100 from 26 overs.

Guptill, who reached his half-century off 72 balls, fell seven runs later to Shahid Afridi's guile and Mohammad Hafeez soon sent back James Franklin.
