I also like QuitNet.
The thing that helped me the most when was quitting (it's been over a year) was keeping myself busy. If I was involved in what I was doing, I wasn't thinking about the cravings. The other thing was to replace my old habits--for instance, instead of taking a smoke break at work, I would take a coffee break or have some gum.
I found it to be true that the visceral, physical cravings were mostly gone after the first two weeks. After that the hardest thing was overcoming the fact that I was used to having cigarettes at certain times--during work, after a meal. I still get a craving if I see someone else lighting up, but if I don't see anyone lighting up I never even think about it.
i'm still trying ......
i've gone down from 15-20 cigs to 10-15 a day, and i'm gorging on food to compensate, i mostly smoke when i'm at work. or waiting for a train or a bus, and smoking after a meal is a must. i think it's all linked with the will power.
thanks for the advice guys ,
cheers

:P I am really glad to hear that.
I dont smoke. Ya, how to quit smoking? I got some opinions.
DOs
As what you're doing, you decrease the number of cigratte you having. I think you should drink lots of water, eat some fruits and all kind of healthy food.
Don't quit by your own, like that site had said. Invite some of your smoking friends to quit with you. Then you can share advices and stuff. tell your family, they will certainly support you.
DON'Ts
When you're getting better, try not going pub or where people smokes. If you're friends give u a ciggrate, dont accept it, you might think once a while is okay but slowly, you will smoke again, like my dad.
THINK
You can also think all the damages smoking can cause you. Think of how much money you can save not smoking, what a pretty face with a sweet smile you will have.
That's just my idea, if it don't works, PLEASE DONT BLAME ME! :P
dear merchant of death...
Offering advice being a non smoker, shows ur concern, thanx a lot !
i was practising most of what u said , except for the drinking the water thing . its still hard to quit.
but i cant get myself to quit smoking in a few situtations like
- in the shit house , i cant shit with out a smoke in the loo early in the mornnig.
- after my meals
- while waiting.
this is a good and useful discusiion...best of luck karma
i'm just curious ....
does going for a lighter cigerette help ????
i mean if i move down from 8mg cigs to 6 mgs or less , will that help ???
a friend of mine told me that it doesnt help , you end up taking longer puffs to compensate for the nicotine ........
any tips anyone ??????
No it doesn't help, you'll just smoke more, thats what my mom is doing.
Just stop.
Thats the bottom line.
Just stop do something else when you have an urge to smoke.
Then you will kick back into withdrawl for about a day or so, and from there all you have to do it not think about the stuff and force yourself not to do it again.
I'm a second hand smoker, 15 years old, I'm almost dead and I'm pretty sure I'll e diagnosed with lung cancer soon.
Your putting yourself and other people around you at risk.
Its something my mom hasn't figured out.
I tell her when she smokes my chest hurts really bad, but she doesn't care.
She says she worries about me, naw don't think so.
If you think my way is torturing yourself, do so as you please, you deserve it for starting in the first place. A little abuse and hurt never really killed anyone.
Try having a person 6 inches from you and start up a cigar, see how they like it.
hmmm... nice thought and some good advice
i'll try putting it to action...
thank you !
Go cold turkey for a while.Nicotine Patches and that are crap.
What? You smoke at the shit house?? Never mind, I know it's a bit boring. Maybe you can bring a book along with you, read it while you shit ( I dont think it's a good idea :? )Quote:

Yes addictions are hard to get over.
Alot of your brain messages are covered up with Addiction and nicotien blockers so messages and cravings are more set in the brain, and messages are more blocked and you can go brain dead because of this.
When you keep your addiciton, your addiction blocker is fused with your brain wave cells and starts destroying them.
The only way is to quit within a year, or keep the craving / urge for the rest of your life and just give up.
hexicetree,
thanx for the advice , i chew gum most of the time, i smoke while chewnig gum too.
i've tried not carrying a pack of cigs with me , so when in need one i dont have one , but in the last 4 days i ended up buying one wheneveri needed one , now i've got 3 packs extra with me ..... my idea dint work.
but i'm happy cos i did cut down on the number of cigs. previously i'd puff off 3 or 4 packs a week , but now i'm down to 2.5 or 3 a week.
thanx for the advice ppl..

Ive never smoked myself but i have had many fiends who have and i know it was very tough. Patches, gum they tried it all but most just had to knuckle down and use will power. Lost wanted to quit because they were scared by cancer reports ect.
Dear karma,
I know excactly how you're feeling.
I was a heavy smoker for 18 years myself. I used to smoke about 20 cigaretts a day.
I always wanted to quit smoking before the doctors tell me to.
One day a collegue of mine suggested that I sould read "The easy Way to stop smoking" by Allen Carr.
I had nothing to loose, so I bought the book. I started reading it during my launch breake at work and when I went home I continued reading. In fact I couldn't put it down. I finished the book at nearly 1:30 in the morning.
The next morning, I woke up and smoked my last cigarette.
That was it. The date was October 2nd, 2002. I haven't smoked NOT ONE cigarette since then, and I haven't missed it AT ALL. In fact I have forgotten how smoking was.
I'm sure that this book will help you, the way it helped me.
Here is the URL of the book : http://www.allencarrseasyway.com/
Oh! And Congratulations for trying to quit smoking. Well done.
If you wanna quit smoking try those stickers you put in your body! I think one member of my family quited smoking with them!
hi ps2 formuz....
yes at one point of time i did consider getting patched up , but i've got lots of advice otherwise ..
i think it comes down to will power , which i thoroughly lack :(
i'll keep tryin,

You need to get it out of your mind, out of your system. You need to forget about it.
Using the power of will you'll make it even harder because you would keep thinking about smoking all day.
Try the book. You have nothing to loose.
I'm sure that you're gonna ask me what the book says.
Don't worry. It's not a medical book. It doesn't say anything about heart attacks and lung cancer. It won't frighten you, It will help you.

Hello Karma330,
Yes I have stopped smoking and I have organized stop smoking sessions.
The best method I know is a group therapy called "5 Day Plan" and it's organized by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
They sometimes call it "Breath-Free".
You have many Seventh-day Adventist churches in Australia, you should be able to find one easily.

hi guys ,
i'm really dissapointed overmyself ,
i've been through a lot of work pressure the last few days and i kinda postponed my " trying to quit". i've gone back to normal of smoking my regular doeses everyday. maybe its not the right time to quit. i cant take all the work presse without my fags.
i am planning to quit when i take some time off from work mostly on a long vacation ,
my sincere thanks to all who were concerned .

What philosophical, psychological and parapsychological innervisions are being revealed on quitting smoking! Think of your family, children and the cancer you donate them by your smoking, just be proud of that, and never quit it. What else, a better disease than this can u give them?
Often people are more addicted to the chemicals IN the tobacco, than the tobacco itself. Try to find some organic tobacco and buy that, then after that it might be easier to follow the other good suggestions to get rid of the habits of smoking.
i'm glad that the adivice is pouring in. like i said i'm planning to quit during vacations , i'll try all the advice then. i hope other smokers are also profitting from this discussion.
cheers
