The National Eligibility Test (NET) for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and eligibility of lectureship will be conducted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and the University Grants Commission on December 23. The subjects are Chemical Sciences; Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Science; Life Sciences; Mathematical Sciences; Physical Sciences; and Engineering Sciences. Candidates may apply only for either JRF or lectureship or both. Separate merit lists will be prepared for each.

Eligibility

Those who have passed the examinations of M.Sc., B.Tech., B.Pharm,, MBBS, integrated BS-MS or equivalent programmes with at least 55 per cent marks may apply. Those awaiting results or those with a B.Sc. (Honours) degree with at least 55 per cent marks and enrolled in an integrated MS- Ph.D. programme may appear for the test. Those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and the physically and the visually challenged need only 50 per cent marks. The upper age limit for the test for the fellowship is 28 as on July 1, 2012, relaxed up to five years in the case of women, those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and the Other Backward Castes, and the physically and the visually challenged. There is no age limit for the lectureship examination.

Test

The single-paper test will have multiple-choice questions for 200 marks. From 9 a.m. to 12 noon, examinations for Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Physical Sciences will be held. From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Chemical Sciences; Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Science; and Engineering Sciences papers will be held.

Part A of the question paper will be common to all subjects, including Engineering Sciences, with questions testing general aptitude, logical reasoning, graphical analysis, analytical and numerical ability, quantitative comparison, series formation, puzzles and so on.

In Engineering Sciences, Part B questions test mathematical and engineering aptitude and Part C will have subject-related questions generally from topics in the syllabus. For other disciplines, Part B shall contain subject-related conventional multiple-choice questions and Part C higher value questions that may test the candidate’s knowledge of scientific concepts.

The test will be held in 26 centres, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Karaikudi, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Nagpur, Varanasi, Delhi and Kolkata.

The application fee for the general category is Rs. 400, Other Backward Castes Rs. 200, and for those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and the physically and the visually challenged Rs. 100. The application form and information bulletin can be had from select branches of Indian Bank on payment of the application fee. In Kerala, the branches are at Vyttila, Kochi; Main Central Road, Baker Junction, Kottayam; Sweet Meat Street, Kozhikode; Swaraj Round East, Thrissur; and Mahatma Gandhi Road, Thiruvananthapuram. The bank will distribute the forms till September 18.

The forms may be had by post from Indian Bank, 3/1, West Patel Nagar, New Delhi – 110 008, by sending a crossed demand draft drawn in favour of Indian Bank, West Patel Nagar, New Delhi, payable in New Delhi, two self-addressed slips and a requisition letter so as to reach there on or before September 10.

Applications can be submitted online on Human Resource Development Group - CSIR till September 18. The filled forms or printouts of the online application, along with the required enclosures, should be sent by ordinary post to the Senior Controller of Examinations, Examination Unit, Human Resource Development Group, CSIR Complex, Pusa, New Delhi – 110 012 so as to reach there on or before September 24.

The list of candidates registered will be posted on the website on November 23. The result may be declared in March 2013 and the fellowship will be given from April 1 with two-year validity for joining the CSIR scheme.

The CSIR junior research fellows should register for Ph.D. within two years from the date of joining their fellowship. The stipend of a fellow will be Rs. 16,000 a month for the first two years and the annual contingency grant Rs. 20,000.

On completion of two years, if the fellow is registered for Ph.D., the fellowship will be upgraded to Senior Research Fellowship and the stipend increased to Rs. 18,000 a month from the third year.
