Kumarakom is a popular tourist destination on the banks of Vembanad lake in Kottayam district of Kerala. It is 15 km from Kottayam by road. The Kumarakom bird sanctuary is the best place to watch migratory birds. The best time for watching birds is morning and the evening and the sanctuary is open from 6 am to 6 pm on entry ticket.



A houseboat cruise in the serene waters of Vembanad lake will be an unforgettable experience. Pathiramanal island is nearby. The Karimeen (peral spot fish) and Poovalan chemeen (shrimp) are the main fish specialty. The tasty fish curries served at the houseboat is the other main attraction.



Nearest railhead is Kottayam. Kochi International Airport is 80 km away.

I visited Kumarakom during my Kerala trip. It is a beautiful destination to see. This small village is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake. An awesome bird sanctuary is found on 14 acres in this paradise. The birds that attract the visitors are Egrets, darters, herons, teals, waterfowls, cuckoo and wild duck.
