When a cine star attends a function, a huge crowd gathers there to have a glimpse of the actor. If that can happen, then imagine the crowd when all the Kollywood stars gather at a place. The crowd was over enthusiastic and the event was UniverCell Vijay Awards 2008, held at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Saturday. The show began with a peppy performance by actors Rukmani, Lakshmi Rai, Nikitha and Meenakshi.

Like previous years, this year too Rasigan Express vehicle travelled across the state and collected votes from the public for their favourite stars. The favourite category award was chosen on the basis of the votes given by the public. Introducing the awards, Yugi Sethu enthralled the audience with his usual wit and anchor Gopinath followed him. Amidst much fanfare, actor Kamal Haasan won the Favourite Hero award for 'Dasavathaaram' and Favourite Heroine award for Nayantara for 'Yaaradi Nee Mohini'. 'Vaaranam Aaiyram' won in the three categories - Favourite Film, Favourite Director Gowtham Menon and Favourite Song of the year – 'Anjala'.The award winners in the 22 best categories were chosen by jury members comprising Yugi Sethu, Prathab Pothan, Madan and Lizzy Priyadarshan.

Suriya bagged the Best Actor award. Simran won the Best Supporting Actor Female for her performance in the film 'Vaaranam Aaiyaram'. Harris Jayaraj got the best Music Director award, singer Hariharan won the award for his 'Nenjukkul peithidium' song and lyricist Thamarai was awarded the Best

Film 'Subramaniapuram' also bagged awards in five different categories including Best Film award. Kathir bagged the award for Best Cinematographer. Raja Mohammed won the Best Editor award and Rajasekhar won the award in the stunt category.

The much-hyped film 'Dasavatharam' also won several awards. Best Comedian, Best Villian and Best Story Screenplay Writer awards were bagged by Kamal Haasan. It was not just the award function, singers and dancers gave scintillating performances too.
