Default Band Baaja Baaraat Movie Review

    Starring: Ranveer Singh, Anughka Sharma
    Direction: Maneesh Sharma
    Music: Salim-Sulaiman
    Production: Aditya Chopra

With a series of comedy movies hitting the screens, it is time for a family entertainer to utterly entertain us on the big screen. Bollywood had been missing the real spice of a family entertainment for long now and “Band Baaja Baaraat” is worth the wait and it sure does play some ‘Band’ in the theatres this season. The Yash Raj banner always creates hype with grandeur and gigantic sets and the promos were perfect appetizers for the movie. Director Maneesh Sharma needs a pat-on-his-back for churning such a nice and practical movie under the Yash Raj banner. The elite yet big fat weddings that Delhi is known for, is portrayed in its reality and well directed that you enjoy yourself all-through the movie.

The plot of this movie is based on youngsters Shruti (Anushka Sharma) and Bitto (Ranveer Singh), who are freshers, out of Delhi University’s Hans Raj College. While Shruti is focused and ambitious in life, Bitto is portrayed as a laid-back, fun-loving person who could not care much about his life and future. Stereotype? Maybe, but what transpires out of this stereotype characters is something worth watching. Shruti plans on becoming a wedding planner and fate tries to play-up by bringing her together with Bitto and they sure perform magic to everyone’s big-fat-wedding. While working together as wedding planners adds spice to their lives, the movie takes us through their journey as they discover that rules are indeed meant to be broken.

There are couple of things in the movie that stands out as you exit the theatre – Anushka, Ranveer and the vibrancy of colours! Anushka is portrayed as this tom-boyish girl, who is bossy and will do anything to get her work done, not to forget the Delhi ‘gaalis’ and the accent she pulls off so effortlessly. Her costumes are beyond exuberance, be it her patiala suit with short kurtis or her sexy sarees during the weddings. She is a treat to everyone’s eyes and her acting is good too. The promos did make us think that Ranveer might be the same mundane character that we see on screen, but he brings a breath of freshness on screen and makes you wonder where this boy has been all this while.

He packs such a punch of enthusiasm and fine acting that it is surprising to think it is his debut. The on-screen duo share such chemistry that you want to really move your toes and start dancing to the Punjabi number “Ainvayi Ainvayi”. The ‘gaalis’ they share on-screen is really funny. Although the movie runs a little slow and is rough around the edges in the second half but what helps the rough-patch is the beautiful grand sets and the colours red, blue, violet intrinsically meshed with lights.
Every wedding portrayed is unique and you fall in love with the colours, flowers and the lights used in the set and your heart races vibrantly. The first half of the movie is packed with dialogues and spats between the two actors but the scenes in the second half could have helped itself with crisp dialogues and with a little more reference to the story. The second half sure craves freshness and the music could’ve been a lot better since it is only a couple of numbers that come to your mind as you leave the theatre. If Director Maneesh Sharma’s aim was to give us a romantic comedy, he sure has lived upto the expectations with limited characters.. Kudos!
