Lion King roars in India first



Those who grew up in the 90s will recall the awe and wonder with which we gazed upon the big screen watching The Lion King — what was for many of us our first animation film.

In an era before multiplexes came to exist, Lion King opened the doors of imagination and came to embody the perfect family entertainer.

Now, nearly 17 years after the beginning of The Lion King saga, Disney will release the 3D version of the first installment of the franchise for the generation that missed out on the magical journey.

Executive director — marketing and distribution, Walt Disney Studios, Seshasaye Kanthamraju, spoke to DC about the release.

“The 3D version of The Lion King will be released in India on July 29, much before its international release on September 16. With the current excitement around 3D, we felt the time was ripe to renew the love affair with the franchise,” says Seshasaye.

Explaining that the deferment release dates is simply a scheduling decision, Seshasaye also reveals that the film will target those who missed out on this family treat. “Those who remember the film way back from its release in 1994 are parents today and want their children to see the movie too.”

While the film will most certainly revive nostalgia, The Lion King is a franchise that has done exceedingly well in India, simply because it has a little something for everyone in the family.

“Retail and exhibition pundits tell us that The Lion King title is the most popular ever. The story is one that is universal and deals with different kind of relationships —like that between father and son and the amusing friendship that Pumba and Timon share,” says the executive director.

It sure looks like the Indian audience tryst with the The Lion King saga will come full circle this July 29.

What can we say — just like much-loved Elton John song from the same film — this is the Circle of Life.
