    Aachen Cathedral
    UNESCO World Heritage Site

Aachen chapel was the church of coronation for 30 German kings and 12 queens (marble throne is at the upper gallery). The shrine of virgin Mary in the Cathedral contains the four great Aachen relics: St. Mary's cloak, Christ's swaddling clothes, St. John the Baptist's beheading cloth and Christ's loincloth (the next show will be in 2014). Emperor Charlemagne started the construction of the Palatine chapel. The interior of the chapel is embellished by coloured marbles that Charlemagne probably ordered to be brought from Rome and Ravenna.

At the Gothic Choir, the walls are filled with 13 colorful windows that rise 100 feet high (1414). Barbarossa's Chandelier, a huge (4.2-meter diameter) bronze circlet commissioned by Frederick Barbarossa to celebrate Charlemagne's canonization.

The Bust of Charlemagne (made of silver and gold) and the Persephone sarcophagus and Cross of Lothair (990 AD, made from gold and inlaid with precious stones, the dark-blue velvet chasuble with embroidered pearls. Height: 50 cm, width: 38.5 cm, depth: 2.3 cm. Engraved crucifixion on the rear of the cross) are at the Cathedral treasury.

    Entry : Free, €2 fee for photography. Timings : 7 am-7 pm

    Default Hildesheim Cathedral, Germany

Hildesheim Cathedral (St Mary's Cathedral and St Michael's Church at Hildesheim)
    UNESCO World Heritage Site

St Mary's Cathedral was built between 1010 and 1020 in the Romanesque style characteristic of the Ottonic Romanesque architecture of Niedersachsen. It was in fact completely destroyed during a 22 March 1945 air raid, but was rebuilt between 1950 and 1960.

The St Mary's Cathedral has many famous works of art, including its bronze doors commissioned by Bishop Bernward in 1015, a bronze column with reliefs depicting the life of Christ, two large wheel-shaped candelabras from the 11th century, the sarcophagus of St Godehard, the St Epiphanius's shrine from the 12th century and the Baptismal Font from 1225. Within its courtyard is the Anne's chapel (Annenkapelle), first erected in 1321, which was one of the few structures undamaged by the bombings. There is also a 1000-year-old rose bush, which symbolises the prosperity of Hildesheim.
