How to Upholster Couch Cushions



Maybe you want to upholster a cushion because your old one has become frayed or worn, or maybe you want a new look in your living room. Whatever the reason, upholstering a cushion for your couch is simple and quick with an envelope-style cover. A newly upholstered cushion can make a real difference to the look of a room, and if you're doing it yourself you can pick any material you want.

Place the cushion at the bottom of the fabric and fold the material over the cushion twice. This ensures you have enough fabric.

Cut the material to the correct length with scissors, making sure that you have about an inch of material hanging over the sides of the cushion. You should be left with a strip of material slightly bigger than the width of the cushion you want to upholster and three times the height.

Fold over 1/2 inch of the top edge of the material, pin in place and sew with the needle and thread. Once the top edge is sewn, start to assemble your cushion cover, removing all the pins.

Wrap the material around the cushion, starting with the opposite end to the one you have already sewn and hemmed. If the material has a front and back, work with the back facing you as you will turn the cover inside out once you have finished sewing. Place the bottom two corners of the material on the bottom corners of the cushion. Fold the material around the cushion so it is fully covered.

Pin the sides of the material so the cushion fits snugly inside the cover. Remove the cushion.

Sew down both sides of the material where you have pinned. This should leave you with an envelope shape.

Remove all the pins from the sides of the cover and turn the cover the right way around. You should be able to pop the cushion inside the cover, like putting a letter in an envelope.
