Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan’s home production Paheli has been selected as India’s entry to the Oscars. It was chosen out of the 15 films that were screened over the last one week.

According to sources, the jury deliberated for over one-and-a-half hour before choosing Paheli. Although it was a close contest between Paheli, Swades and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black, it preferred the Amol Palekar film for its theme “rooted in the Indian ethos’’. The jury said it had all the ingredients to be India’s pride at the Oscars.

Speaking about Paheli’s selection, Vinod Pandey, who chaired the jury in the absence of Harmesh Malhotra, said, “We have followed the Academy’s guidelines to select a film.’’ Reacting to the nomination, Shah Rukh Khan said, “It makes my belief in films like Paheli stronger. I always knew it has the potential of getting international acclaim. The film has all the ingredients of being a representative of India as it is derived from a folktale. Since I am already in America, I will go all out to promote the film in this country.’’

Subhash Ghai, whose film Iqbal was also in contention, said: “Playing is more important than winning. That is what Iqbal says. I am happy Shah Rukh Khan’s film has been selected. And I wish them best of luck.’’ Madhur Bhandarkar, also among the contenders, said, “Although my film Page 3 was in the running, the jury must’ve seen that Paheli has the potential to win the Oscar.’’
