‘Aatma’ is not a clichéd horror film: Bipasha Basu

Aatma, starring Bipasha Basu and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, is not a conventional horror film with the cliched elements. The story revolves around the relationship between a child and her parents, and supernatural elements have been woven into this emotional drama. Bipasha lets us in on a few details: “I have done a couple of films in this genre, but Aatma is different. Director Suparn Verma has offered me all his films so far. And this time too, I was politely going to excuse myself from the project, until I heard the script. It is an engaging and intelligent movie and isn’t just about supernatural occurrences. It is the story of a mother, daughter and her dead father.â€
Says producer Abhishek Pathak, “Technically, we have tried to come up with something new. Our director of photography was from Sweden, because we wanted the movie to have a European look. We have played with the lighting and the camera angles are slow and steady. The background score is subtle, unlike most horror movies. Also, there are no songs in the 90-minute film.â€
Nawazuddin is all praise for Bipasha and thinks this is one of her best performances. “In this genre, it is very easy for actors to go over the top. Then, the entire plot will start looking silly, but Bipasha is fantastic. In fact, every role in the movie has been brilliantly played. There are no creepy crawlies, ghostly faces, bloodshed and loud sounds to scare you. The movie plays with your mind and keeps you thinking.â€
