The three month old distributor versus exhibitor standoff in Kerala has ended.
Both the parties who were daggers drawn till Wednesday (July 7) morning have called for peace by evening, as new films will start releasing from this Friday.
On July 9, Mohanlal-Sreenivasan Oru Naal Varum will release in 71 screens while Jayasurya's Nallavan will get 55 screens in Kerala. The audiences starved of new releases for the last three weeks are sure to give both the releases a fantastic opening.
Meanwhile, people in the trade are scratching their heads in disbelief, as the entire three month old standoff has ended in a status quo! The condition that prevailed at the time of the conflict remains unchanged.
As per the latest agreement, a committee would be set up to find out ways and means for bringing in changes to existing trade practices and for the smooth functioning of the industry.
It clearly shows that the whole issue was stage managed by certain vested interests who wanted to destroy Malayalam cinema. After making the theatres agree for new terms and conditions regarding the vexing hold over issue, why did the powerful distributor and producer associations cave in at the last minute and maintain status quo?
Once again it proves that in Kerala a handful of people with no legitimate power or position can strike at will and hold an entire industry and the people to ransom.
