‘Item girl’ term is very derogatory: Lakshmi Rai

Actress Lakshmi Rai has strongly condemned the usage of the term ‘item girl’ to describe actresses and artistes performing for a single song in a film and said that the term smacks of any basic decency and only serves as a ‘derogatory’ term.
Lakshmi Rai rarely speaks to the press but has the habit of speaking out her mind. Whatever be the issue, she puts out all her cards and holds nothing back. For the good part of last year, she had been handling the press on her reported ‘liaison’ with India’s cricket captain Dhoni and wished him a happy life when he got married a few months back.
She has Ajit’s upcoming film ‘Mangkatha’ and ‘Kanchana’ in her kitty in Tamil and has also been starring in a couple of Malayalam films titled ‘Christian Brothers’ and ‘Casanova’. Talking to reporters during breaks in shooting, she said that it’s highly condemnable to name an actress as an ‘item girl’ just because she dances for a solitary song in a film.
“After all, it isn’t a crime to dance for a song in a film. The term ‘item girl’ could eventually mean ‘item actress’ and could sow unwanted thoughts in the minds of the readers who come across such usage. It’d be better if an actress is given her due respect for the work she does not only in ‘one song’ but considering her work in her other films as well,†says Lakshmi Rai and appealed to the press to avoid using that term.
