    How to Grow Blue Lotus

The most common form of blue lotus is a water plant resembling a lily. This plant is often used in water gardens, fish ponds and other water features. Blue lotus plants are grown in the same manner as other aquatic lotus plants. They grow from long rhizomes that are divided, when they multiply, to create new plants. The plant grows from the potted rhizomes toward the water surface, creating a floating bloom with waxy, dark leaves.

    Instructions

1 Purchase individual blue lotus plants or divide ones already growing in your water garden. Care must be taken not to break the brittle rhizomes, during the dividing process, as they may be entwined with each other. Just remove them from the tub and gently pull them apart. Each divided rhizome must contain two or more nodes.

2 Plant your blue lotus rhizomes in a large tub or pot, at least 32 qt. Place 5 or 6 inches of soil into the tub. Add an inch of gravel.

3 Poke holes in the soil with your finger for the rhizomes, deep enough so that the top of the bulb-like root is just covered. Push soil over the top. Space them about 5 or 6 inches apart.

4 Place the planted tub into your pond or water garden. The water should be about 4 inches above the top of the rhizomes. If the water is deeper, simply place bricks under the pot.

5 Place a brick or heavy stone, on top of the tub. Be careful not to damage the rhizomes. This will keep the tub from moving.
