    Applications have been invited for the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) to be held from 10 am to 1 pm on May 25 for admission to the five-year integrated M.Sc. programme in basic sciences- Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics at the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, and the University of Mumbai-Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE-CBS), Mumbai.

    The two residential institutes have state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories, modern computational facilities and computer centres and excellent libraries. The students get the INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) fellowship of Rs. 5,000 a month and Rs. 20,000 a year instituted by the Union government for carrying out summer projects.

    The Integrated Science Education and Research Centre, Visva-Bharati, will admit students for its integrated M.Sc. course from the merit list of NEST.

    Eligibility

    Those who have passed Plus Two in the science stream with Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics scoring at least 60 per cent marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade during 2011 or 2012 or are appearing for the qualifying examination in 2013 can apply for NEST. Applicants should have been born on or after July 22, 1993.

    How to apply

    Candidates can apply online or offline till March 8. To apply online, log on to www.nestexam.in and follow the instructions. Upload a photograph and signature of the candidate. The demand draft for the application fee of Rs. 700 (Rs. 350 for those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, the physically challenged and women) must be sent by Speed Post to the Chief Coordinator, NEST, NISER, Bhubaneswar, Odisha – 751005.

    Candidates must write their name and application number on the back of the demand draft, which can be drawn from any bank. The request for offline application form, the completed form and any queries should be sent to the Chief Coordinator, NEST, NISER, Institute of Physics campus, Sachivalaya Marg, P.O. Sainik School, Bhubaneswar, Odisha – 751 005.

    Test

    The admit card will be available for downloading and dispatch from April 8. The question paper will have five sections. Section I is compulsory for all candidates to attempt and will have questions on general science to test awareness of basic scientific facts. There will be no negative marking.

    Sections 2 to 5 will contain questions from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Candidates are required to answer any three of the four sections. The objective-type multiple-choice questions are designed to test subject comprehension and analytical ability. In the subject sections, there will be negative marking for incorrect answers. NEST 2013 will test knowledge of major historical milestones in subjects such as Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science and Environmental Science.

    The number of seats at NISER, CBS and ISERC is 60, 35 and 21, respectively.

    Thanks for the information. My younger brother is reading class XII and I think it is a good opportunity for him.
