    Default PC Tips

    Folder Options Missing

Many of us sometimes find the folder options missing in windows explorer.
    Here's the solution

Open Run and then type "gpedit.msc".
Now goto User Configuration > Administrative templates > Windows Component > Windows Explorer.
Click on Windows Explorer you will find the 3rd option on the right side of screen "Removes the Folder Option menu item from the Tools menu"
Just check it, if it is not configured then change it to enable by double clicking on it and after applying again set it to not configured.

I hopes that you will find the option after restarting windows.

Default Enable Administrator at Welcome Screen

    View Admin At welcome Screen

By default windows XP doesn't show the Administrator in the user list at the welcome screen. Here's a way to get around it.

    Now head up to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ WindowsNT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon\ SpecialAccounts\ Userlist

Create a new DWORD entry and name it as Administrator and change its value to 1.

Exit and reboot for the changes to take effect.

To change it back change its value to 0 or simply delete the key.

    Default Repair Corrupt Vista Files

Some Windows Vista errors are caused by corrupt system files causing instabilities, but troubleshooting these problems manually can be almost impossible. Thankfully, Vista includes a "System File Checker" application that will verify the integrity of core system files.

There are 2 types of scan, a verification and a scan/repair mode. The former will only check the files without repairing them automatically, the latter will fix any errors it finds.

To begin, load the command prompt by starting "cmd" from the run box (Press WINDOWS KEY + R to access this)

Then, type in one of the following commands (followed by the enter key) depending on the type of scan you wish to perform:

    * sfc /verifyonly - To verify any corrupt files only.
    * sfc /scannow - To verify and fix any corrupt files.

This will then start the scan and inform you of any files that require fixing.

I would like to share that most of the time folder options is not show is because of virus infection/s.

And most of the time regedit is also corrupted, I've tried it myself... virus removal is the first thing to check. :)

Default Enable and Disable automatically running CD-ROM

When you insert a CD-ROM disk, your CD-ROM drive always runs automatically for the default setting (autorun CD-ROM). We have a tip to disable running your CD-ROM drive whereas you can enable it running again as you want. This tutorial will teach you to enable or disable running CD-ROM drive by editing a registry. Follow these steps.

    * Click Start > Run .
    * In the Run dialog, type regedit and press Enter.
    * In the Registry Editor window, Go to the path like below,

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\CurrentCo ntrolSet\ Services\ Cdrom

    * Now you can see the AutoRun DWORD in the right panel, double click on it.
    * Change the Value data to 0 for disabling automatically running CD-ROM, then click OK. If you want it to automatically run again, you must fill 1 value in the Value data.
    * Close Registry Editor window and reboot your computer.
    * Test it by inserting your CD-ROM disk. Now your computer does not automatically runs your disk.

Yeah, that's a good one. But "gpedit.msc" will not work in XP Home Edition.

Default Remove the Recycle Bin from the Desktop

Remove the Recycle Bin from the Desktop

If you don't use the Recycle Bin to store deleted files , you can get rid of its desktop icon all together.

    Run Regedit and go to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/explorer/Desktop/NameSpace

Click on the "Recycle Bin" string in the right hand pane. Hit Del, click OK.
