I think PhpBB2 is working fine. It is easy to use and user friendly.
Can't complain for a free forum, can I?

    Just my two cents :)

Well, phpBB is a fine bulletin board, but every now and then rises up some security flow. The latest was "Session Handling Administrator Authentication Bypass" which allowed malicious users to gain administrator's privileges and access ACP. If you are concerned in your forum's security more than the look, I'd recommend you some other bulletin board, like Invision Power Board or vBulletin.

it's got it's pluses and minuses.

Honestly PHPBB is highly customizable with hundreds of MODs... But is like swiss cheese when it comes to security.

Invision Powerboard is a little more stable and has more ridged code.

but in the end I would like to see components of Invision Powerboard to be mixed with PHPBB. But other than that I like PHP because it's a little easier to install. and easier to modify. ^^

I've used PHPbb forever and have had no other alternative. It is an EXCELLENT board and does its job. If I was to recommend one: this one is the one.
