    Arikamedhu


    It is an archaeological site at a distance of 20 kms from the Pondicherry town. Recent excavations here have revealed some Roman coins, wine jars and other remains, which prove that Arikamedhu was the earliest Indo – Roman trading centre.Arikamedu is situated on the bank of river Virampattinam,3 KM south of Pondicherry of India.The items excavated from this site proved that there were regular contacts between ancient India and Rome.Most of the remains dates back to Arretine Ware;dates back to A.D. 200.Those were excavated including warehouse,building.Sir Mortimer Wheeler excavated this site in 1945.Arikameda became the place of maritime commerce.It was become an important port,exporting textile,glass, gems,shell bangles were exported.Wines,Olive oils and other items were imported from Arikameda.Tourists must visit Arikamedu to learn the historical importance of the site.
    The important items were excavated from this site:Arretine Ware,Amphorae-high-necked handled jars,Roulette dish.Other items including metal objects( iron nailsand other items)an ivory handle, a wooden toy boat etc.Arikamedu is an archeological site,a great attraction for the tourists.Now tourists can see only the perpendicular walls and a mission house.For more information about Arikamedu and its historical importance, tourists could visit the Pondicherry Museum.


    Botanical Garden



    The garden was laid out in the year 1826. Many plants were brought here from the different parts of the country and also places like Ceylon and Reumian.
    Botanical garden public place in which plants are grown both for display and for scientific study. An arboretum is a botanical garden devoted chiefly to the growing of woody plants. The plants in botanical gardens are labeled, usually with both the common and the scientific names, and they are often arranged in cultural or habitat groups, such as rock gardens, aquatic gardens, desert gardens, and tropical gardens. Botanical gardens perform diversified functions, e.g., the collection and cultivation of plants from all parts of the world, experimentation in plant breeding and hybridization, the maintenance of botanical libraries and herbariums, and the administration of educational programs for adults and children.

    Default Firewalking in Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu

    Vellavari Firewalk festival

    Fire walkers observe 40 days fast and wear saffron coloured clothes. After a purificatory bath, walk through the fire stretch to the astonishment of the spectators. It is celebrated 3-4 times in a year (Jan to Apr). Men, women and children walk on fire at local temples to fulfil vows.

    Sedal festival

    The famous Sedal is understood to mean self-imposed physical torture undertaken by devotees who pierce small silver hooks and spears in their body or tongues in fulfillment of some vow. It is said that as many as 100 needles are pierced over their body. They then go in a procession after a bath clad in turmeric strained clothes.
