Audio Engineering : Institutions and scope

Sound or audio engineering involves the indepth study of the technical and creative aspects of sound recording, sound designing, editing and mixing. The film and television industry always needs talented professionals in the field of sound or audio engineering.
Those who desire to become sound or audio engineers can pursue professional courses in sound recording and design, audiography and sound engineering. Graduates in any discipline who have studied physics at Plus two level are eligible for admission to these courses.
Study Facilities
There are several institutions offered different level courses in sound engineering. Prominent among them are as follows:
The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting , offers a three year full time Postgraduate diploma course in Sound recording and Sound design. Intake capacity is 14 seats. Bachelors degree holders in any discipline who have studied physics at Plus two level are eligible for admission.
The Institute also offers a Postgraduate certificate course in sound recording and television engineering. Total number of seats available for this course is 12. Eligibility criteria is same as mentioned above.
The selection to above courses is based on an all India level admission test conducted by the FTII followed by an interview. In Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram will be the test centre.

The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, an autonomous institution under the Union Government conducts a three year full time residential Postgraduate diploma course in Cinema Audiography. The number of seats available is 10. Bachelors degree holders in any discipline who have studied physics at the plus two level are eligible for admission. The upper age limit is 30 years. The selection is based on an admission test and an interview.

The MGR Government Film and Television Institute , CIT Campus, Taramani, Chennai – 600113, under the Government of Tamil Nadu, offers diploma course in film technology and television production (sound recording and sound engineering). Those who have passed Plus two with physics and chemistry or diploma holders in electrical or electronics and communication engineering are eligible for admission. Total seats – 14. Most of the seats are earmarked for natives of Tamil Nadu.
The Biju Patnaik Film and Television institute of Orissa, Cuttack - 753007 offers a three year full time diploma course in sound and television engineering. Candidates who have passed Plus two in Science subjects are eligible for admission. The selection is based on an aptitude test and interview. (Phone: 0671 – 241396.
The Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, Pune offers three year full time course called Bachelor of Media Studies with specialisation in audio and visual production. Eligibility – Plus Two pass in any subjects combination with atleast 50 percent marks in aggregate. Selection is based on entrance test and interview conducted by the institute.
The School of Communication under the International School of Business and Media offers BSc degree in Media Communication and Multimedia technology. A pass in Plus two examination is the minimum eligibility for admission. The school also conduct MSc degree in Media Communication, Television and radio production. Graduates are eligible for admission.
The School of Audio Engineering (SAE) with study facilities and studios in Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi conducts degree and diploma courses in audio engineering. SAE offers BA degree in digital film and recording, a comprehensive degree programme in film and audio engineering. This three year course covers various areas like sound design, film production, computer graphics design, broadcast production, studio management, video production for multimedia and so on. The Diploma in Recoding Arts (sound engineering) programme of SAE offers intensive training and covers every aspects of music and audio production from tracking to mixing and mastering. This course has eleven modules including introduction to basic studio studies, audio equipment music theory, advanced studio studies, digital recording and mixing, accoustics, postproduction and so on. A pass in Plus two is the minimum qualification for admission to these courses. SAE is accredited globally by the Middlesex University, London.
Whistling Woods International Institute for Film and Television Animation and Media Arts, Mumabi – 400065 conducts a two year full time course in sound recording.
