Google doesn't place as much emphasis on the alt tags as it used to because people kept stuffing them with keywords. They appear to ignore the keyword meta tag altogether but it makes sense to have an optimised meta tags for title and description.

The thing that will really make a difference is having incoming links to your site from relevant web sites with optimised anchor text.
