Review

Dil Kya Kare, Kajol’s first movie since her marriage to Ajay Devgun, is a good family entertainer, with sweet music.

Anand (Ajay Devgun) and Kavita (Mahima Choudhary) are husband and wife, with an adopted daughter Neha, (Akshita Garud). They can’t bear to see the child cry. Their whole life revolves around this child.

Kavita discovers that a nice aunt has been visiting Neha. The mysterious aunt presents her toys and plays with her. Kavita catches on and finds out that Nandita Rai (Kajol), the good aunt, is actually the mother of the child. When Nandita meets Anand, realization dawns upon her. Now the story begins to roll.

A series of startling revelations follow, shattering Kavita's quiet family life. She comes to learn that Nandita and Anand already knew each other, and, in fact, the adopted child is the daughter of Anand and Nandita.

Anand feels trapped between the two women both of whom love him with equal passion. After spinning a tale of emotion and love, director Jha slowly sets about resolving the complex situation.

Jha never loses sight of the main plot and keeps the viewers engaged in guessing the outcome. Ajay Devgun, the sober hero, in his usual style, manages to impress. The mess in which he finds himself, not wanting to hurt either his wife or his past love, is brought out effectively.

This is Kajol’s first film release since her real life marriage to Ajay. Kajol is cast as the ‘other woman’ posing a threat to a stable, happy family. She has succeeded in projecting different shades of sentiments.

Mahima has, perhaps for the first time, got a challenging role, which she performs quite competently. Chandrachur Singh provides the light touch as a poet who is attached to Anand and Kavita.

Jatin Lalit's melodious tunes have been leading in the music charts.
