death penalty
I oppose it on many grounds.
the first is pragmatic.
the death penalty does not deter crime. It's only value is in getting people to confess to lesser sentencing, and death should not be a threat but a judgement.
if the death penalty worked, then texas and especially harris county would have less violent crime, because texas has more death penalties carried out each year then all other states combined. and harris county (houston) has the most in the state. their violent crime rates are normal.
for the death penalty to really deter, we would have to be like china, who executes like crazy. but in doing so, they murder the falsely accused.
the death penalty is racist. a black man convicted of a duplicate crime a white man commits is much more likely to be sentenced to death.
most right wingers are christians.
if a murderer is not a christian, and you put him to death before he can convert, then you are shortchanging him and he goes to hell.
if a murderer has become or is a christian, then I guess you could, but would you want to put a "brother" to death?
it is not a deterrent. it is expensive to house and maintain.
i say no.
