How to Keep Your Laptop in Working Order While Backpacking
There was a time when backpacking involved stuffing clothes into a bag and heading out for the unknown. Times
have changed, and backpacking is rarely as simply done. Many backpackers now carry laptops , and usually for
similar reasons - a way to store and edit digital photos, to update a website or blog, to stay in touch with family, and to kill time on trains or airplanes.
While there are many advantages to carrying a laptop while backpacking, too many backpackers travel with a notebook pc, only to have it ruined, rendered useless, or stolen. Just like everything else in backpacking, it is important to research and carefully plan the use of a laptop before wandering countries away from the nearest repaid shop.
These tips will help you keep your laptop safe, clean, and functioning, and help reduce the risk of having it stolen.
Apple or PC?
This is important. While Macs usually have less issues with crashing and viruses, they are also more expensive to repair and it's more difficult to find parts. If you are looking to buy a notebook for traveling, decide if you are willing to risk a lack of repair parts while abroad should they be needed. If you are going to a poor location where you wouldn't be able to get parts for either machine, than choose whichever machine you prefer.
Avoid Failure
By avoiding failure, I mean 'avoid hardware failure'. This is a problem, because the problem can be difficult to diagnose. The most common reasons for machines failing is dropping, dirt, and moisture.
Dropping is dangerous, as the LCD can crack, the body can crack, or the internal parts may become damaged. The best prevention for this is to purchase a laptop sleeve that is tight-fitting and about ¼ inch thick. This will help absorb shocks and keep the body safe.
