    Default Soof Embroidery

Soof (lit. “triangle”) is a technique counted out from the back of the fabric. Geometrical, whimsical variations of traditional motifs, including stylized flowers and figures, convey wishes of fertility and prosperity for the newlyweds. The designs are created with surface-satin stitches of varying lengths that allow most of the valuable silk to be visible on the front.

    Kantha work

Kantha work is a style from the state of Bengal that uses the simple running stitch in the most beautiful ways imaginable. It is one of my favorite styles.

The word Kantha actually means rags or waste cloth used by the women of Bengal to make quilts. A traditional Bengali woman’s sari is a soft white cotton fabric with a red border. When the sari got old and soft after several washes, it was used to make quilts. The simple running stitch was used all over the quilt to hold the layers together and also to embellish it.

Quilt making was mostly a work of leisure and art and never meant for commercial purposes. It took several women to stretch and hold several layers of the fabric together. Once this was done, these women embroidered their own designs on the quilt. The design usually began at the center of the quilt and slowly extended out.

Today, Kantha more as a style of embroidery that is done using the running stitch. Sometimes, stem and herringbone are also used. Typical thread colors are red, green, black and blue. Commonly used designs are peacocks, elephants, fish, lotus, creepers, leaves, flowers and temples.

    Chicken Work

Chicken Work is almost similar to Shadow work. Like Shadow work, Closed Herring Bone stitches are done on the wrong side of the fabric but the stitches are not done as perfectly as in Shadow work.

In chicken Work, stitching is always done with white cotton rough thread and the fabrics used is thicker than those used for Shadow Work - usually cotton. Though both follow the same stitch they have a totally different appearance.

    Shadow work

Shadow work as the name implies, is the shaded part of a design worked on the wrong side of a fabric.

Shadow work is usually done on fine transparent fabric like Organdy, Organza etc. and the Stitch used for shadow work is Closed Herring Bone Stitch, also known as Double Back Stitch. The colour of the thread appears delicately through the fabric giving the design a shadowy appearance.
