Chromebook is not something a new concept for us, we have already seen some limited units of Chromebooks being distributed to several developers across the globe, with recent Google developers conference going on we really expected an official announcement of its existence and there it is, Google chromebook from Samsung making its official launch.



Chromebook cannot be really told as a replacement or alternative for your actual netbook, its very much limited to what it can do at the moment, one of the main reasons for it is the interface itself, its not the usual interface we are used to so far, Chrome OS is actually the Google Chrome browser and if you have used it before then you should be familiar with almost 90% of the working of this interface, most of the operations like using the word document, preparing a powerpoint presentation and other office related works has to be done on the cloud using Google docs, there are obviously apps available for chrome but most are cloud based as well and needs internet connection to work, to put things simply chromebooks are actually of no to very little use when you are offline, all of your files will be stored on the cloud which is good as you can access your files from anywhere you have an internet connection without any need to store it in your hard disc drive, but people do prefer to have their files locally as well which can be done but at the moment it offers very limited storage space considering other netbooks which costs much less.


Coming to the device itself its a thin device and weighs like any other conventional netbooks we are used to with weight around 1.48kg and with thickness of .8 inches it feels very slimmers when you look at it, it has a glossy outer surface with chrome Logo on it which makes it look neat. On the inside it features a 12.1 inch display which looks very nice with decent viewing angles. Keyboard on this one is different from what you find on your normal windows based laptop, this is obvious considering the fact that this one is designed for Chrome OS is particular, its a chiclet styled keyboard, has a nicely sized keys which are comfortable to type on. Definitely has a huge trackpad which is pretty sensitive to touch and nice to use, we like bigger ones, though you might sometimes accidentally place your palms over the trackpad while typing and make the cursor go crazy. Has a webcam above the display which samsung claims its capable of doing 720p videos and feels very proud in saying so.


Under the hood its powered by 1.66GHz Intel Atom Dual-Core N570 Processor which looks pretty powerful especially on a lighter interface it runs on which do not really demand much of your CPU’s power, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD storage. Like we mentioned before its runs on Chrome OS which obviously takes up lesser power, its claimed to give you 8.5 hours of battery life despite its brighter LCD display on regular use and should give you about 5 hours of video playback.

Connectivity options include, mini-VGA, HDMI, 4 in 1 memory card slot, Wifi and optional 3G. Chromebook might sound intriguing when you look at it, but being frank the operating system it runs on can be loaded in to most netbooks at present which comes at almost the same price or even lesser in some cases, secondly typical netbooks have more hard disc space and can run windows OS if needed. Of course you are attracted to its form factor and definitely much higher quality display screen then this one might be a good option for you to go for if you can live with its limitations of course.

Samsung ChromeBook S5 is not yet available in India, we expect its price to start at around Rs.22,000/- Approx for Wifi only model.
