Default MBBS: Govt and SF seats increased

At last that problem too stands resolved. The number of MBBS seats in govt medical colleges in Kerala marks an increase of 50. The number of seats at Calicut Medical College has been increased to 250 from 200. All other four govt medical colleges maintain the last year quota. As per the latest statics available wth the website of Medical Council of India the govt medical colleges and the number of MBBS seats santioned for this year are as follows. Calicut Medical College (250), Trivandrum Medical College (200), Kottayam Medical College (150), Alapuzha Medical College (150) and Trishur Medical College (150).

At the sametime, the number of seats in private self financing medical colleges marks an increase of 100 seats. The notable thing in this year is the sanctioning of 100 seats to SUT, Trivandrum which had no approval last year and withdrawal of sanction for Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences, Chalaka, Ernakulam. As reported earlier, Sri Gokulam Medical College, Trivandrum has got sanction for an additional intake of 100 seats.

As per the latest seat matrix revealed by MCI, there are 22 Medical Colleges in Kerala. Out of this five are govt medical colleges. Two are co operative medical colleges. One is under a Deemed unicersity (Amrita) in which the state govt has no control. Four Medical Colleges are under Inter Church council which have been out of the purview of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations for the past five years. It seems that this year also they are allowed to maintain the status quo. The rest 10 colleges and the number of colleges sanctioned for this year by MCI are given below.

    1. Azeezia Instt of Medical Science,Meeyannoor, Kollam (100), 2. Dr. Somervel Memorial CSI Hospital & Medical College, Karakonam, Thiruvananthapuram (100), 3. Kannur Medical College, Kannur (100), 4. Karuna Medical College, Palakkad (100), 5. KMCT Medical College,Calicut (100), 6. M E S Medical College , Perintalmanna Malappuram (100), 7. Malabar Medical College, Kozhikode (150), 8. Sree Uthradom Thiurnal Academy of Medical Sciences,Trivandrum (100), 9. Sri Gokulam Medical College Trust & Research Foundation, Trivandrum (150), 10. Travancore Medical College, Kollam (100).

There are 1100 MBBS seats in these 10 SF medical colleges. If they come to an agreement with the govt this year also as in the past, there will be 550 seats to which CEE can make allotment. In the govt medical colleges there are 900 seats altogether. After demarcating for All India Quota and govt nominees there will be 736 seats to which the CEE can make allotment.

At Pariyaram Medical College there are 100 seats out which 50 seats are for govt allotment and the rest for management to fill, if we go by the last year practice. At Kalmassery Co operative Medical College which come under the Co Operative Academy for Professional Education (CAPE) 50 seats out 100 seats are for CEE's allotment on merit quota and 35 seats are for management quota which also are supposed to be filled by the CEE. The rest 15 seats are set apart for NRI admission by by the management.

Thus the total number of MBBS seats which come under CEE's medical allotment for this year is estimated as 1421.

At the same time even on July 1, the Health Ministry's website which has an update of the same date does not mention about the seats revision in Kottayam and Alapuzha Medical Colleges. Most probably , only by the second allotment schedule the Health Ministry will be able to update the vacancy position according to the latest MCI decisions. The AIPMT counseling is scheduled to begin today.
