How to Pack a Wedding Dress Into a Travel Box

A wedding dress should be protected in order to keep its shape, color and details intact. When traveling with the dress, take steps to pack it carefully to avoid wrinkles and tears and prevent crushing.

Pack your wedding dress into a garment bag. As you are packing the wedding dress, make sure to place it evenly in the bag, without wrinkling or bunching any part of the dress as best you can.

Stuff the sleeves of the dress -- if it has sleeves -- and the bodice of the dress with tissue paper that is free of acids or dyes. This ensures that the dress retains its shape and does not flatten in transit.

Seal the garment bag. Fold it carefully and tuck it gently into a strong box for traveling. Make sure that the box does not bend or fold easily, as this may cause creases in the dress once it reaches its destination.

Seal the box. If the box is strong enough, duct tape or packing tape should do the job. Do not use something like super glue, as you will want to be able to open the box once you have reached your destination.

Pack the box with the dress inside the garment bag into a hard suitcase to ensure that nothing bends or breaks in transit. Carry the suitcase with you if you are flying -- check with your airline as to carry-on luggage sizing -- and tuck it into an overhead compartment. If you are traveling for your wedding or simply transporting your gown, you should always try to carry it on so you do not lose it. Wedding dresses are expensive and it would be disastrous to lose it before your big day.

Label your suitcase clearly with your name, address and phone number. A luggage tag would work, but you might also consider writing this information on your suitcase in large letters with a silver or gold pen.

    Bridal Dress Styles

One of the most anticipated tasks on your wedding checklist is selecting your bridal gown. If you're like many brides, you've picked out your dream dress years before meeting your fiancé. However, as the date nears and you select a theme for your event, you may realize that a tulle ball gown with a 14-foot train may not work for your summer beach wedding. Learn the different dress styles and choose the one that not only works best for your special occasion but for your personal style and body type.

    The Classic Bride

If you consider your style to be more traditional than contemporary, you're likely to favor ball gowns and A-line styled dresses. These classic gowns have come a long way, as designers have added several options to the look, including appliqués, extensive beading and even pockets. A-line dresses with a fitted bodice and ruffled organza skirt give you a figure flattering alternative to a long flowy gown. An A-line flatters most body types, providing natural curves and dimension to your overall look. For a classic formal gown, try the princess cut ball gown in satin with a ruffled front organza underlay.

    Modern Bride

If you don't particularly care for a gown that fits into any special type or group and are making plans for a modern wedding, choose a couture dress in a nontraditional pattern or fabric. A ball gown fully layered in tulle is a whimsical style that is perfect for an outdoor wedding. Consider a sweetheart neckline with a pick-up skirt or knee-length dress for a casual informal wedding. Other modern styles are those with a pleated bodice or asymmetrical design on either the bodice or skirting.

    Femme Fatale
For a hot little number that will wow your fiancé and show off your curves, opt for a mermaid style or sheath dress. These figure-hugging styles will have all eyes on you as you reveal a super-low back line, plenty of cleavage with a fitted strapless or your waistline with a halter sheath. When you want to feel like a vixen walking down the runway --- aisle --- choose a gown that accentuates your positives with fitted flare.

    Drama Queen
To make your guest's eyes drop when you enter the room, choose a dress that packs a powerful punch in the drama department. From an over-extended train to a taffeta ball gown with floral appliqués overpowering the entire skirt of the dress, choose something that matches your over-the-top personality. A one-shoulder gown with an abundance of draping will have you looking like a Greek goddess, as will a long empire dress with a slightly fitted bodice and backless design. Choose a dress with extra fabric, draping or pleating for a look that soars.
