Common Pregnancy Pains Common Pregnancy Pains

 Backache

With 75% pregnant women experiencing backache, it has become a common problem during pregnancy. With the hormonal changes and growing uterus, your abdominal muscles overstretch, body posture changes, which puts a lot of strain on the spine thereby, causing back pain. You can feel this pain every time you walk, sit, stand or bend. Pregnant women, generally, experience two types of lower back pain- Lumbar pain and posterior pelvic pain. Lumbar pain is felt approximately at the level of your waist. Sitting or standing for longer periods becomes excessively difficult when undergoing such pain. Posterior pelvic pain is experienced in the buttocks or in both sides of the thighs. You can minimise backache by avoiding physical activities, which sap you off your energy.

 Leg Cramps

During pregnancy, a woman goes through massive physiological changes. Your knees carry your weight as well as the baby’s weight. This extra weight increases the pressure on your knees and hips thereby, resulting in leg pain. Due to the increased load, leg muscles have to work harder during normal physical tasks. This increases the strain on your legs and further elevates the pain. Another potential reason for leg cramps could be hypercoagulable state, in which blood clots are formed in the legs. Leg pain is a serious problem; its avoidance can lead to a lifelong problem of leg cramp. To treat leg pain, take proper rest. To cope with this pain, increase your calcium intake by adding calcium supplements to your diet. Before doing this, consult your doctor.

 Abdominal Cramping

Abdominal cramping, which is a common symptom of pregnancy, can also point to something serious. It can occur at any time during pregnancy. In early pregnancy, abdominal cramps can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy. In the first trimester of pregnancy, it can be experienced due to implantation of the embryo in the womb, the buildup of uterine lining and increased blood volume. In the last trimester of pregnancy, abdominal cramping is felt due to the growth of the uterus; abdominal cramping may accompany the initiation of labour.

 Braxton Hicks Contractions
Braxton Hicks contractions occur in the last trimester of pregnancy. They are not a part of the labour pain, but are very uncomfortable and painful. Some expecting mothers experience them while sitting or walking, but these contractions cease once they change their position. Rhythmic breathing may lessen the discomfort of these contractions or lying down on your left side may also ease the pain.

 Breast Tenderness

Within one or two weeks of conception, women experience breast soreness and swelling. This tenderness causes a tingling sensation and pain in the nipples. Breast tenderness is common in the first and last trimester of pregnancy.
