For the first time in several years, Mohanlal is going out of his way to promote Grand Master, which is tremendously helping the film.

UTV Motion Pictures has tied up with Vodafone, who are the mobile partners in the film and carrying out an outdoor, radio and SMS campaign in Kerala for Grand Master. For the radio promotion, Mohanlal lent his voice, which is being air on now in Kerala radio FM channels.

Also, Mohanlal is so involved that he will be promoting the film by giving interviews to all the TV channels for three days this week. He will also be meeting the audience selected by Vodafone on 7th after an exclusive show to the audience.

Grand Master has generated lot of positive buzz post the screening to censor board and all the main theatres are keen to screen the film on 3rd May.

B Unnikrishnan, the director of the upcoming Mohanlal-starrer Grandmaster, is livid about false and made-up reports by people who claim to have already seen the film.

"I am surprised by the cyber criminality of some who spread absolutely baseless info on Grandmaster's leaked out climax and the film's source," the director has said in protest.

Trouble began when negative comments about the nature of the film started appearing on social networking sites.

"It's probably a film community or just a bunch of youngsters who have nothing better to do. They have been stating that Grandmaster is a copy of films such as Taken or Seven, even while I have been ensuring all that there is no truth in such rumours. Some quote 'preview reports' as being bad, when there have been no previews at all. One miscreant has credited himself with being a filmmaker and the chief official of the film community," said the director.

"We took out the comments from the site, but these people seem to be logging on with different IDs and reposting the same set of comments. I have taken up the matter with the Cyber Cell in Kochi. They are already working on the case. It is easy to find the IP address, so we should be able to catch these cyber criminals within 48 hours," he said.

Incidentally, the film has just been passed by the Censor Board with a U certificate.

"To date, the film has only been seen by trusted crew members and select people of the production house - UTV. There have been no other screenings and no chance of any scenes being leaked. There is no question of trusted people speaking such things about it either," he says.

While such criminal activity online is nothing new across film industries, this time the director believes it has crossed all limits.

"The bigger the expectations from the film, the bigger the scale on which such criminal activities seem to be taking place," said Unnikrishnan.

എന്തുകൊണ്ട് ചന്ദ്രശേഖരനെ ഈ മര്*ഡര്* സീരീസിലേക്ക് കൊലപാതകി വലിച്ചിഴയ്ക്കുന്നു എന്നതാണ് ചിത്രത്തിന്*റെ ഹൈലൈറ്റ്. എന്തായാലും കളിക്കാന്* തന്നെ ചന്ദ്രശേഖരന്* തീരുമാനിച്ചു. ആ തീരുമാനത്തോടെ കൊലയാളിയുടെ വിധി കുറിക്കപ്പെടുകയായിരുന്നു.

‘ഗ്രാന്*റ്മാസ്റ്റര്*’ കണ്ടിറങ്ങുന്നവരെല്ലാം പറയുന്ന ഒരു കാര്യമുണ്ട് - പ്രമാണിയോ ത്രില്ലറോ എടുത്ത ബി ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണനെ ഈ ചിത്രത്തില്* ഒരിടത്തും കാണാനാവില്ല. തന്*റെ മുന്* ചിത്രങ്ങളില്* നിന്ന് പാഠം ഉള്*ക്കൊണ്ട്, മുമ്പ് പലവട്ടം ആവര്*ത്തിച്ച തെറ്റുകളെല്ലാം തിരുത്തി ഒരു ക്ലീന്* എന്*റര്*ടെയ്നറാണ് ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണന്* സമ്മാനിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.

തിരക്കഥയാണ് ഈ സിനിമയുടെ പ്ലസ് പോയിന്*റ്. കൊലയാളിയും പൊലീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനും തമ്മിലുള്ള ഗെയിം പോലെ തന്നെയാണ് സ്ക്രിപ്റ്റും ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. നായകന്*റെ ഓരോ നീക്കവും ത്രില്ലടിപ്പിക്കുന്ന രംഗങ്ങളിലൂടെ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഹോളിവുഡ് സിനിമകളില്* മാത്രം കണ്ടിട്ടുള്ള ടൈറ്റ് സ്ക്രിപ്റ്റിംഗ് രീതിയാണ് ഈ ചിത്രത്തില്* പ്രയോഗിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.

ആക്ഷന്* മൂഡിലുള്ള ഒരു സിനിമയ്ക്കിടയില്* ഫാമിലി സെന്*റിമെന്*റ്സ് കൂട്ടികുഴച്ച് ബോറാക്കുമോ എന്ന് പേടിച്ചവര്*ക്കും ചിത്രം ആശ്വാസം നല്*കുന്നു. അനാവശ്യമായി സെന്*റിമെന്*റ്സ് കുത്തിനിറച്ചിട്ടില്ല. ‘അകലെ നീ...’ എന്ന ഗാനമാകട്ടെ പ്രേക്ഷകര്* ആസ്വദിക്കുന്നുമുണ്ട്.

ഏറെക്കാലമായി മികച്ച ത്രില്ലറുകളൊന്നും ലഭിക്കാതിരുന്ന മലയാള സിനിമയില്* പുതിയ നീക്കങ്ങളുമായി ബി ഉണ്ണികൃഷ്ണന്* വന്നിരിക്കുകയാണ്. കാണുക, ആസ്വദിക്കുക - A play with the real Grand Master.

UTV Motion Pictures marks their entry in Malayalam with Grandmaster, directed by B Unnikrishnan. In the lead role, Mohanlal plays almost his age without much high voltage action sequences and the film turns out to be a pretty engaging one.

Chandrasekharan (Mohanlal) is an IPS officer who lives some kind of a lonely life after being divorced from his wife, Deepthi (Priyamani), a leading criminal lawyer. As the head of the Metro Crime Stopper Cell, Chandrasekharan is entrusted with the investigation of a series of murders.

Kishore (Narain) and Rasheed (Jagathy Sreekumar) assist him in the investigation. The cops soon find that there are some intriguing links that connects the murders and they start tracking the culprits.

The film has a real shaky start with a rather meek first half but things get interesting in the second half. The writer-director has succeeds in keeping the viewers almost clueless about the suspense, until the last moment.

The narration is pretty old fashioned and the lines often sound clichéd, but there are some real nice moments in between.

Grandmaster may have been partly inspired from the Agatha Christie novel The A.B.C. Murders or its movie version The Alphabet Murders (1965), directed by Frank Tashlin with Tony Randall playing the popular Christie detective, Hercule Poirot.

If you start mulling over the storyline and the contents, there is nothing great to rave about, but with slick visuals and good style, the director packages the film in a fast paced manner. The music is pretty fine and goes with the narration.

In a matured style, which has not been seen for a while, Mohanlal shines as the soft-spoken cop. Most of his co-stars including Priyamani, Narain, Jagathy Sreekumar, Anoop Menon and Roma have comparatively limited roles to play, but they have done their parts well.

In the end, Grandmaster easily turns out to be an engaging watch. Watch it, if you appreciate such honest attempts.

Verdict: Good
