Did you format it in FAT 16?
In that case do delete the primary partition with FDISK and reformat it in FAT 32 or in NTFS.

If you still don't know or how to check your drive:
You should check it on DOS mode only. THen use PartitionMagic (DOS version) and run it there. It's much more helpful and easier to use, that is if you don't know how to read and check using command line partition managers.
First you should have a bootable FD
Well to get the partition magic, you must first install it on the windows machine and copy the dos version it have from the installed folder.
Then run it within DOS, and the screen is pretty self-explanatory and contains an intuitive interface plus help file :)
Maybe your hard disk has bed sectors ! May be, you should check it by scandisk !
while we use ntfs in boot mode the system shows e" as f: and f: g: one drive incremented and the format goes to difficulat and ntfs is notthatmuch problem..then if u have bas sectors nothing to worry just run surface scan from ur windows 98 second edition cd rom it will move ur datas from bad sectorn to normal avaoiding the bad one..
Partition Magic is the bestest. I have Hiren's boot cd and Partition Magic is on this cd. Partition Magic is fast, but fdisk is slowly. Insert boot flopy in your fdd and open scandisk. Or your hard have 2 partitions, and second is hidden or not fat32. Or in your BIOS view the hdd.
