Default Vishu to be celebrated tomorrow

The people of the state gear up to celebrate Vishu tomorrow with gaiety and fervour. Vishu usually falls on the first of Malayalam month Medam.

For Keralites, Vishu is an important gateway into a new beginning.

On Vishu, people always ensure that they open their eyes to an auspicious image of the Vishukkani, first thing in the morning. On the night before the festival, it is the responsibility of mothers to make the vishukanni. Basically all the auspicious things like fruits, vegetables, jewellery and clothes along with images of Lord Vishnu are arranged in a neat order in the pooja room, which all together is called as the Vishukkani.

People wear new clothes for the occasion and head of the family and others give money, called Vishukkaineetam, to all members of the family.

Kanikkonna, a golden-yellow flower associated with Sri Krishna is used liberally throughout the pooja room. This flower only blooms when the sun is in its most exalted position astrologically-the month surrounding Vishu.

A sumptuous sadya is served in the afternoon with payasams.
