I must correct jpfd in that the bandwidth you get is 500 MB/month, which you can upgrade through the non-spam posting system. i.e. You can request more bandwidth for your site as long as you reach a certain number of posts in the forums. For example, you can get 1 GB/month for 20 useful posts (I think the numbers were like this, but I'm not sure).
Bandwidth is important, because it sets the amount of information which can be downloaded from your site. By downloading I don't mean just putting files on there which can be downloaded by the users. Actually, every time a visitor accesses your site he is consuming bandwidth, because the server has to send the html and images files to the user's PC, so that the web site can be displayed. So this is a form of downloading.
If your site bears heavy images, videos or whatever could consume large amounts of bandwidth, or if you're expecting a large number of visitors per month, you might want to consider getting an upgrade.
Once all your monthly bandwidth is consumed your website will be down until the end of the month (as if the server had gone down), when your bandwidth gets reset.
Regards.
