First digital film in Malayalam
V.K. Prakash's Moonnamathoraal is all set to be the first Malayalam film to be made and released on a full-fledged digital format. Prakash, an ad filmmaker has made films like Punaradhivasam, Freaky Chakra, Mullavalliyum Thenmavumand The Police all noted for its technical brilliance.
"The film has been shot with a high definition camera and will be released simultaneously in around 150 theatres across Kerala. The projection will be done with the help of a satellite and a hard disk," says Prakash. “The main advantage of digitalization is that the production cost can be reduced and the video piracy can be avoided to a great extent" added Prakash.
There are no film rolls and theatres will download the film on hard disks on the day of release. The number of days for which the film will be shown can be decided too. The director points out that the technology has cut down production costs in a big way in the absence of film stock. Also, the picture quality is better when compared to film rolls, which looses its clarity after a few screenings.
Moonnamathoraal is a horror film shot in Peerumedu with Jayaram, Vineeth, Jyotirmayi, Samvrutha and Shireen in the lead. Emil and Eric handle the technical aspects of digital screening and music is by Ouseppachan.
