Siachen glacier
Siachen glacier (Ladakh, India) : World's highest battle field. Indian army is stationed there since 1984. The height of the glacier - Satoro bridge - ranges upto 6700 m. Indian army spents more than $1million annually to maintain the post.
The northern most part of India is Indira col, Siachen. Most of the soldiers die due to the extreme low temperature. Leh is the nearest town, while Panamik is the roadhead for the glacier. The Leh - Panamik road climbs via Khardung la (5600 m - World's highest motorable road). From Panamik the glacier is 3 - 4 days trek (Permit from Defence minstry is required due to the proximity with Pakistan border).
