Jagannath temple Puri
Jagannath temple : It is a major Hindu pilgrim centre and is one of the four Dhams in India.Jagannath means 'Lord of the Universe'. The main deities in the temple are Jagannath, Balbhadra and sister Subhadra. Jagannath is another name of Lord Krishna. The temple tower is 65 m high and is built on elevated ground, which makes it to look even larger. The temple is in 10.7 acres surrounded by two rectangular walls. The temple is said to have the largest kitchen in the world and feeds of thousands of devotees every day. The temple has as many as 6000 priests. 'Nila Chakra', a wheel on the top of the temple is made of an alloy of eight metals called Ashta Dhatu. A flag is tied on every day on a mast attached to the Nila Chakra.
On every Ekadasi day, a lamp is lit on top of the temple near the wheel. Thirty small temples surround the main temple. Infront of the main gate is an 11 m pillar, Aruna Stambha, which is used to be in front of the Sun temple Konark.
